What are the responsibilities and job description for the Coordinator II, Media Relations (226 Days) position at Dallas Independent School District?
- Serve as the spokesperson and point of contact as assigned for general media outlets.
- Develop districtwide media relations strategy plan for department and track overall coverage to determine earned media values and outreach effectiveness.
- Research and respond to media requests (local, state, and national), to ensure the district is positioned appropriately and the message is delivered accurately. When necessary, arrange media interviews with other district representatives, setting up virtual links, teleconference calls, or in-person interviews.
- Write news releases, media advisories, public service announcements, and talking points featuring district news, programs, initiatives, and events to ensure the district’s goal is successfully communicated to the media and the community.
- Direct and prep staff for media interviews, participating as needed and providing anticipated questions based on the reporter’s scope of interest, etc.
- Coordinate the Superintendent of Schools’ visits to general market and other markets.
- Coordinate publicity efforts for various news events with partners and internal departments for external promotion of events, awareness campaigns, and recruitment efforts.
- Maintain positive relations with all markets, to ensure positive coverage among all audiences.
- Prepare bi-weekly media requests reports for districtwide dissemination to School Leadership and other departments impacted
- Serve as part of the crisis communication team connecting with schools to gather information and creating communications to support principals when emergencies arise at their campuses including writing letters in English and Spanish for parents.
- Host weekly educational segments for/with media outlets, including doing the research for topics and the writing scripts to reach out to parents with key information to help their students.
- Attend assigned school board meetings and other duties as assigned
- Bachelor's Degree from an accredited university
- Three to five years of experience in a related field such as public relations, journalism, broadcasting, marketing, promotions, and community relations preferred.
- Bilingual is a plus--English and Spanish
- Must be self-motivated and able to work independently with minimal supervision
- Experience in working with multi-cultural, multi-ethnic audiences.
- Skills in written communication, oral presentation, and program planning.
- Effective leadership, team-building and supervisory skills; ability to meet deadlines; tact, diplomacy and flexibility.
- Superior verbal communication and relationship skills with strong customer-service orientation.
- Experience in working with the public and communicational media in providing information and interpreting programs.
- Knowledge of local media, schools, community issues and governmental processes.
- Ability to develop and implement an active district plan for community, parent and student engagement.
- Strong organizational, excellent speaking, public relations and event management skills.
- Ability to work on several projects concurrently and to positively engage staff and community in efforts
