DEFINITION
Under direction to provide supervision, security, guidance and care to youth placed in the Dane County Shelter Home, Detention Center or in the Community in a manner which promotes their safety and the safety of the community, increases the youth's skills and abilities to contribute positively to the community, and promotes a sense of responsibility for behavior in the youth; and to do related work as required.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES
Provides supervision and guidance to juveniles relating to health, hygiene, and social skills; assists in the development of constructive recreation and education programs; provides input in the development of overall program goals and objectives; counsels with individual youths to assist in their development and transition and observes and evaluates behavior on a day to day basis; may perform intake duties and serve as an information source to local agencies; monitors school attendance and behavior; meet with youth and families in the community; monitor youth's compliance with court orders; attend court; enforces regulations and policies related to the security and operation of the facility and program; promotes the development of pro-social behavior skills through a team approach to discipline and behavior management; conducts room and personal searches and carries out related duties to ensure physical safety and facility security; performs housekeeping and cleaning duties and assists in planning, preparing and serving meals; assists in the maintenance of the facility; provides physical control over dysregulated, aggressive or resistive youth in order to maintain a safe and secure environment.
Education, Training and Experience:
Any combination equivalent to high school graduation and one (1) year of professionally supervised experience in providing supervision, teaching, guidance or care to adolescent youths. Two (2) years of related college study may be substituted for six (6) months of the described experience. Experience in working with juveniles having educational, social, or emotional problems is desirable.
Special Requirements:
Must be available for all shifts including weekends and holidays. For some positions a valid Wisconsin driver's license may be required and for job related reasons, employment consideration may be restricted to males or females only. The Detention Facility requires that permanent staff must receive state certification as a Detention Officer by completing a 160-hour Detention Officer training course and passing the required tests after hire.
Background Check Statement: Some positions may require a criminal background check which can include fingerprinting due to the nature of the job’s responsibilities. Wisconsin’s Fair Employment Law, s. 111.31 – 111.395, Wis. Stats., prohibits discrimination because of an arrest or conviction record. However, Dane County may disqualify an applicant if the position’s responsibilities are substantially related to the applicant’s criminal history (e.g., the nature of the crime and its relationship to the position, whether hiring, transferring or promoting an applicant would pose an unreasonable risk to the business, its employees, customers and vendors, etc.) Management reserves the right to make employment contingent upon successful completion of the background check.
For Bilingual Positions:
- Provide services in both English and the required foreign language (e.g., Spanish, Arabic, Hmong, etc.).
- Applicants being considered for bilingual positions will be tested during the recruitment process prior to employment. This will primarily consist of passing an oral language proficiency assessment from English to foreign language and foreign language to English, but may require additional language testing, such as written translation, if it is an essential function of the job.
*If applicable, individuals may confirm with the Employee Relations Division whether results of bilingual language certifications/ examinations they currently hold qualify them for the position’s bilingual designation.
Physical and Environmental Work Requirements:
Must be able to lift or pull up to eighty (80) pounds unassisted and heavier loads with assistance; ability to stand for prolonged periods of time; ability to intervene in verbal and physical disputes.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Knowledge of adolescent behaviors; possession of effective oral and written communication skills; ability to be firm and fair in dealing with young people; understanding of and ability to relate effectively to the cultural background of youth; ability to maintain composure and exercise good judgment, especially in emergency situations; knowledge of community resources; ability to intervene in verbal and physical disputes; ability to work cooperatively with local officials, agencies and the public; ability to demonstrate personal standards that will serve as a good model to young people; ability and willingness to carry out cooking and other household duties; ability to learn how to use emergency and other equipment, food safety procedures, fire safety procedures and the operation of the physical plant; ability to stand for prolonged periods of time; ability to relate firmly and fairly to juveniles; must be able to lift or pull up to eighty (80) pounds unassisted and heavier loads with assistance.
