We are seeking an IMS (Information Management System) Database Administrator (DBA) or IMS Systems Programmer in Frisco, TX and this position is a Hybrid
The client is looking for a highly experienced IMS (Information Management System) Database Administrator (DBA) or IMS Systems Programmer with expertise in IBM IMS DB/TM (Transaction Manager) on z/OS mainframes. The ideal candidate should have strong technical troubleshooting, performance tuning, system administration, and disaster recovery (DR) experience.
What the Client is Looking for in a Candidate:
IMS Database Administrator (DBA) or IMS Systems Programmer with deep expertise in IBM IMS on z/OS
Strong in IMS database structures, logging, recovery, and checkpointing
Experience in troubleshooting, performance tuning, and upgrades
Ability to handle Disaster Recovery (DR) exercises and IMS monitoring tools
Skilled in JCL, TSO, SDSF, JES2, and SMP/E
Comfortable leading projects, managing small teams, and solving complex problems
Flexible to work overtime, weekends, and travel if needed
Job description:-
Manage the database and ensure 100% availability.
General Responsibilities
Requires good problem solving skills.
Ability to debug & diagnose DBMS system and utility software
Requires IMS Sysplex experience & datasharing expertise
Various types of IMS restarts (COLD/WARM/ERE).
Knowledge about IMS SYSGEN process - Defining/Adding Transactions and Programs to the IMS system.
Knowledge of IMS Controls Blocks (DBDs, PSBs, ACBs).
Knowledge of IMS Database Recovery Control (DBRC) concepts and RECON datasets
Should be able to handle the annual Disaster Recovery (DR) exercise activities.
Sound knowledge about IMS Logging - OLDS; SLDS; WADS;RLDS
Command Codes: Concepts and usage of different command codes. Both Type 1 and Type 2 IMS commands and various IMS Utilities
Working knowledge of IMS Upgrades.
Checkpoint - Restart: Difference between Basic and Symbolic Check pointing and corresponding Restart logic.
Secondary Indexing concepts
Fast path database processing concept: Main Storage Databases (MSDBs) and Data Entry Databases (DEDBs)
Difference between DLI and BMP modes.
Different access methods: HDAM, HIDAM, PHDAM, PHIDAM etc...
Design, code and maintain DBMS system exits
Performance analysis & tuning for DBMS subsystems
IMS Monitoring Tool- Proficient- Required Monitoring tool
Proficient in JCL, TSO/SDSF/JES2/SYSVIEW/SMP/E
The ability to manage small groups, lead projects and coordinate multiple tasks under time and resource constraints
The ability to deal with complex problems and issues and then be able to propose intelligent practical solutions
The ability to prioritize workloads effectively to meet changing business needs
Ability to work well in a team environment Ability to project a professional image to both outsourced and potential clients
Overtime and weekend work occasionally required, some travel may be necessary
Must be able to work with staff in geographically diverse locations
