Position Purpose
The Donald Claflin Jewelry Studio is a well-equipped jewelry and metalsmithing studio for Dartmouth students and is part of the Hopkins Center for the Arts. The Jewelry/Metals Instructor is a two-year appointment, .75 full time equivalent (FTE) and benefits eligible staff position that is responsible for the safe operation, mentorship/instruction and coordination of the studio space and its students. The position monitors student access and interaction, maintaining safety, smooth operation, instruction, creating a welcoming and enriching educational environment.

Required Qualifications - Skills, Knowledge and Abilities
- At least two years of professional jewelry/metalsmithing experience.
- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience in the jewelry/metals discipline.
- Ability to articulate technical processes.
- Ability to develop community and comradery within the studio.
- Strong generalist in the jewelry/metalsmithing field.
- Working knowledge of all the basic procedures, functions and practices of jewelry/metalsmithing including metal construction techniques.
- Detailed knowledge of safe usage of all relevant facilities, equipment, and supplies.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills with demonstrated teaching abilities.
- Strong organizational and administrative skills.
- Ability to work independently, setting priorities and with good follow-through.
- Commitment to diversity and to serving the needs of a diverse population.
Preferred Qualifications
- At least two years’ professional teaching experience.
- At least four years’ jewelry/metalsmithing experience.
- Proficiency with CAD, 3/D printing, and jewelry casting.
- Proficiency with Adobe Photoshop and Creative Cloud applications; documentation skills.
- BFA and/or MFA.

Instruction
The Jewelry/Metals Instructor is responsible for teaching participants with varying experience in a broad range of jewelry/metals topics, in all phases of their projects in a non-credit, makerspace environment. Topics include design, fabrication, casting, finishing, enameling, lapidary, metal-forming, safety and more. Teaching is hands-on, and includes open studio format, short, structured sessions, special, non-credit, personal enrichment classes, and serving the needs of Dartmouth’s academic community.

Studio Operation, Safety and Maintenance
In addition to instruction, this role is responsible for overseeing studio maintenance and operation in a safe and effective manner. This includes managing student assistants and working with other staff, making sure equipment is functioning and is well organized. Studio cleanliness is a high priority for a safe and organized educational environment.
The position supports the studio Director with respect to administrative responsibilities such as scheduling, student payroll, sales, inventory, materials purchasing, student attendance, and more.
