Description
The Mechanic A performs maintenance, diagnostics and repairs in a safe, efficient and customer focused manner. The primary focus of the Mechanic A is preventative and proactive maintenance. Performs equipment maintenance by completing inspections, correcting vehicle deficiencies and performing vehicle maintenance to the Alexandria Transit Company standards. Examines maintenance and repair of equipment to manufacturer’s guidelines to preserve the safety and reliability of all fleet.
Responsibilities/Essential Functions:
- Performs all levels of Preventative Maintenance Inspection on all DASH fleet vehicles.
- Performs all levels of repairs on all DASH vehicles, including diagnosing equipment for proper repairs.
- Requests and orders required parts for repairs and maintenance.
- Opens work-orders for all repairs or service / inspections.
- Test drives vehicles for verification of proper operation before and after service.
- Follows established procedures / OEM procedures for all maintenance/repairs.
- Works independently while performing job duties.
- Reads and understands repair manuals.
- Reads and understands wiring schematics.
- Maintains proper knowledge of compulsory DOT requirements.
- Assists other technicians when necessary.
- Uses hand tools, pneumatic tools and hydraulic tools including ancillary shop equipment in the performance of job duties.
- Makes road calls or service calls.
- Corrects all aspects of vehicle deficiencies; makes adjustments and alignments, identifies worn and damaged parts; removing, repairing, adjusting, assembling or disassembling all units as necessary to complete repairs.
- Diagnoses causes of any malfunction and performs final operational check on all vehicles to ensure the quality of repairs.
- Attends departmental meetings related to service area planning and improvements.
- Problem-solves and mediates unexpected and unusual diagnostic problems and requests lead mechanic direction when necessary.
- Cooperatively and efficiently performs related tasks and duties as required.
Qualifications
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Requires a complete set of mechanics tools.
- Must be computer literate and able to interact with vehicle maintenance management technology.
- Knowledge of electrical wiring fundamentals.
- Ability to read manuals and schematics.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others.
- Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
- Ability to make independent decisions within scope of responsibility.
Emotional, Psychological and Physical Requirements:
Ability to:
- Handle emergency situations
- Make quick and concise decisions under pressure
- Deal with the public on a secondary basis
- Greet and meet with visitors, clearly disseminate information to others
- Concentrate on priority tasks with frequent interruptions
Physically:
- Ability to bend, squat, climb stairs and lift frequently
- Ability to work on the road in varying weather conditions assisting in maintenance operations
- Ability to move throughout facilities and grounds
- Ability to lift at least 60 lb., occasionally
- Ability to work in confined spaces
Additional/Miscellaneous/Special Requirements:
- Possess or ability to obtain a Class B (Passenger and Air-Brake endorsement) Commercial Driver’s License with P endorsement within 60 days of hire.
- Must successfully complete and pass a comprehensive background check.
- Must successfully complete and pass drug screen testing upon hire and as regularly required by policy for position.
Education and Experience:
- High school diploma or GED required.
- Relevant technical school training is beneficial, but not required.
- Minimum three (3) years of vehicle maintenance or mechanic experience required. Diesel mechanic experience is preferred.
- Extensive experience may be considered in lieu of educational background.
