Knowledge, Skills, Education, and Experience RequirementsKnowledge Requirements:
- Chemistry, microbiology, immunology, or related fields involving extensive laboratory analyses.
- Laboratory equipment, reagents, and techniques.
Skills and Abilities:
- Analyze routine laboratory problems and develop effective work methods.
- Perform various laboratory analyses following standard procedures.
- Observe precautions and conduct precise, accurate work in receiving, identifying, labeling, analyzing, and shipping samples.
- Handle laboratory equipment, utensils, materials, and supplies to prevent breakage, deterioration, and loss.
- Maintain records and files accurately.
- Utilize various electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency or office.
- Communicate effectively in English (reading, writing, speaking, and understanding). American Sign Language or Braille may also be acceptable.
Education Requirements:
- Successful completion of 60 semester hours from an accredited college/university, including 24 semester hours in biological and/or physical sciences.
Mandatory Skills/Certification(s) Requirement:
- A certificate in Clinical Laboratory Technology may substitute for the above education.
- OR Two (2) years of experience as a technician in a public health, hospital, clinical, or research laboratory performing bacteriological, chemical, histological, serological, and/or virological tests may be accepted in place of the required credits or certificate.
Note: The Bio Threat Response Lab where the individual will be working is a CDC’s Division of Select Agents and Toxins (DSAT) Registered Space, therefore, newly hired employees must agree to a thorough background check that will include fingerprinting and Security Risk Assessment (Background check conducted by the U.S. Department of Justice/FBI on individuals requiring access to select agents and toxins, in accordance with the Public Health Security and Bioterrorism Response Act of2002). Also, candidates for a position at the BTRL may be subjected to pre-and/or post-employment alcohol and drug testing. If these requirements are not met, we reserve the right to terminate employment.
