Job Description: Teacher Assistant
Minimum Job Requirements
1. Eighteen years of age or high school graduate.
2. 6 ECE Units and working toward more.
3. Understanding of the growth and development of young children.
4. Maturity in relating to other professionals and in relating to children.
Minimum Responsibilities for Teacher Assistant
1. Assist in the planning and implementation of a daily curriculum.
2. Assist in creating and maintaining a safe, neat, and orderly environment for children.
3. Become familiar with each child as an individual and treat them with respect.
4. Assist in preparation of needed materials in any room.
5. Supervise children on the play yard and during designated outdoor time, in designated areas.
6. Supervise children when the classroom teacher is out of the room (Assistant must have 12 ECE units to be alone with children).
7. Participate in coursework, conferences, or training sessions for continuing professional training.
8. Attend scheduled staff meetings. Participate in annual comprehensive program evaluation to measure progress made in program’s goals and objectives. Contribute feedback toward program improvement.
9. Set-up and clean-up indoor and outdoor environment and general housekeeping duties as necessary to maintain a safe, neat, and orderly environment.
10. Notify the classroom teacher of any significant change in a child's behavior, physical condition, or family situation (such as a new baby, divorce, separation, hospitalization, etc.). Notify classroom teacher of a child sustaining any injuries on the school grounds.
11. Contribute to individual child portfolios including samples of the child’s work, written record of observations pertaining to each child's performance and growth, parent conference reports, daily anecdotes, and notation of injury or anything unusual to be noted on child's record.
12. Attend school and community events.
13. Continued study and training in Early Childhood Education to keep abreast of new research and gain additional knowledge. Attendance outside of working hours at in-service training classes, parent meetings, study of books and other literature, attendance at recommended professional conferences and meetings, membership in recommended professional organizations and attendance at recommended meeting, workshops of those organizations and enrollment in courses offered at local colleges and universities.
14. Work towards BJE requirements and NAEYC requirements for early childhood development and professional growth. Submit to the director a summary of workshops attended and documentation of continuing education.
Staff Expectations and Responsibilities
Preparation, Organization and Daily Follow-Through
- Arrive at school on time with a positive attitude.
- Be prepared and organized before the children arrive.
(e.g., Is your room set up? Is the yard set up?)
- Greet students in a friendly and pleasant manner.
- Remain flexible in relationships with the students & parents.
- Develop a warm relationship with the student’s parents.
- Use classroom materials appropriately and return them to their original place.
- Be thrifty with supplies and returns extra materials in a timely manner.
- Look at the whole class situation rather than getting bogged down with details
- Make a conscientious effort to be on time for specialists and yard time.
- Turn in lesson plans, classroom newsletters and monthly calendars to the office in a timely manner according to schedule.
Classroom Management
- Maintain a child-oriented classroom.
(e.g., gives children choices, materials are within child’s reach)
- Involve all the children in an impartial manner.
- Be realistic in the demands made of your students.
- Be aware of the student’s sensitivities, special needs, and/or allergies and be tactful dealing with them.
- Make a conscientious effort to remind yourself of the developmental stage of each student.
- Foster independence in the students.
- Coordinate long term and short-term goals in the overall improvement of the class program.
- Help each child to recognize his role as part of a larger group.
- Maintain control of the class using appropriate positive discipline techniques.
Professionalism and Team Building
- Maintain a professional attitude and appearance while on the job.
- Recognize your class as part of a unified school by avoiding over-possessiveness of your “own” group.
- Assume your share of joint responsibilities. (e.g., yard, classroom, duties, and tasks)
- Be helpful and willing to share ideas with other staff members to improve the quality of the school.
- Accept suggestions and constructive criticism from the Directors and other staff members gracefully. Retain composure in tense situations.
- Make an effort to expand your knowledge of good early education techniques through courses, institutes, and /or professional workshops.
- Be loyal to the school and its philosophy.
- Be conscientious of your attendance and the use of sick days.
- Avoid indulging in gossip with relation to our students, parents, or other staff members.
- Participate willingly in pertinent school activities, outside of regular hours. (e.g., Staff Meetings, Special
Shabbat Services/Dinners, Holiday Functions, etc.)
- Always speak respectfully to children, parents, and other staff members.
- Participate in co-sponsored community events.
Job Type: Part-time
Pay: $17.00 - $19.00 per hour
Expected hours: 16 per week
Schedule:
- 8 hour shift
