General Statement of Duties
Provides responsible supervision and assistance during various recreational and educational activities.
Distinguishing Features of the Class
An employee in this position typically plans, organizes and provides supervision and assistance during activities for children and youth. Work is performed under the immediate supervision of the Recreation Activities Program Manager.
Illustrative Examples of Work
- Schedules the Playground Assistants; ensures staff are wearing appropriate attire.
- Obtains guest speakers.
- Plans, organizes and supervises daily activities, arts and crafts; ensures the site and equipment/supplies are clean and safe to use; ensures the proper use of facilities/equipment/supplies.
- Ensures all supplies are prepared and ready for the day’s activities, arts and craft; ensures all supplies and equipment are returned and checked in at the end of the day.
- Ensures facilities are secured and lights/faucets are off before leaving for the day.
- Ensures the activities and programs are appropriate for the age group(s) attending.
- Ensures registration and permission forms are completed by every parent/guardian; provides completed forms to Recreation Activities Program Manager for record keeping.
- Collects fees and issues receipts; keeps a record of and reconciles monies received with receipts on a daily basis.
- Ensures every participant is signed in each morning, signed out each afternoon and picked up by the proper person; maintains a daily and weekly record of attendance.
- Ensures the proper behavior of participants, and that the children are having a safe, fun and comfortable time.
- Completes accident and disciplinary paperwork as needed.
- Notifies Recreation Activities Program Manager of any problems or needs.
- Adheres to the department’s safety rules and regulations.
- Other duties as assigned.

- Ability to lead, supervise and instruct groups in recreational activities.
- Ability to plan, organize and supervise playground activities.

- Must have the desire to work with children and youth in a recreational setting.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective interpersonal relationships with other employees and the public.
- Ability to work scheduled hours.
Physical Requirements
- Worker must be in good physical condition.
- Requires the ability to perform basic life functions of climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing for long periods of time, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, fingering, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing and repetitive motions.
- Must be able to perform light work exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 10 pounds of force frequently, and/or a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects.
- Worker is required to have close visual acuity to prepare and analyze data and figures.
- Must be able to work in environmental conditions that require both inside and outside work with no effective protection of weather.
- Must be able to work in conditions that are subject to contact with potentially infectious bodily fluids.
Education and Experience
- Graduation from an accredited college with a four year degree in education or related field and some experience supervising and working with children; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Must successfully complete Davidson County ’s New Hire Orientation on first day of employment.
Licenses and Certifications
- Valid North Carolina Driver License
