General Statement of Duties
Duties associated with the position: assist customers with applications, collect fees, screen applications for completeness and accuracy, answer and return telephone calls, research and supply records upon request, maintain office supply inventory, process daily reports, scan documents, data entry, and apply all laws, rules, and regulations appropriately.
Distinguishing Features of the Class
This position reports directly to the Environmental Health Director- Onsite Wastewater Protection and indirectly to the Environmental Health Director-Food and Lodging. The position will have telephone and face to face contact with general public and a variety of organizations in the community.
Illustrative Examples of Work.
- Answers the telephone, answers client questions, conducts data entry for a variety environmental health services, files and scans records, processes record requests and processes complaints.
- Provides guidance regarding general Environmental Health questions related to On-Site Water Protection, Food and Lodging, Daycares, Tattoos, Public Swimming Pools, Temporary Food Events, Private Water Supplies, and complaints.
- Explains current environmental health rules, laws and policies to inquiring clients.
- Assists clients with onsite wastewater and food and lodging permit applications.
- Screens and processes all applications through an application software, Open Gov.
- Collects fees, provides receipts and provides daily revenue reports.
- Provides a variety of reports to the Environmental Health Directors.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Significant knowledge of office or work unit procedures, methods and practices.
- Significant knowledge of and ability to use correct grammar, vocabulary, spelling and office terminology to compose and/or proofread correspondence, reports and other materials.
- Significant knowledge of accounting procedures, mathematics and their application in the work environment.
- Ability to learn and independently apply laws and departmental rules and regulations covering programs and services.
- Ability to review and process information to determine conclusions, actions or compliance with applicable laws, rules or regulations.
- Ability to apply a variety of work-related formulas or mathematical calculations.
- Ability to record, compile, summarize and perform basic analysis of data.
- Ability to independently work with people with courtesy and tact in performing public contact duties that may be sensitive in nature.
- May require ability to supervise and coordinate the work of other staff, student workers or volunteers.
Physical Requirements
Lifting, carrying, walking and standing are required. This position physically retrieves files from a file room and some filing. Ability to perform typical desk work for an 8-hour workday is required.
Education and Experience
Graduation from high school and demonstrated possession of knowledges, skills and abilities gained through at least two years of office assistant/secretarial experience; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
