General Purpose

The Crisis Recovery Unit is a 24/7 stabilization and short-term residential program for people with serious mental illness or co-occurring substance use conditions. It is also utilized as a stepdown unit from inpatient psychiatric units, as well as a transition point for clients in the process of discharging from the Utah State Hospital. The Crisis Recovery Unit Supervisor is a licensed mental health professional who manages the day-to-day activities of the program, ensuring all clients receive high-quality, client-centered care.


Essential Job Functions

  • The CRU Program Supervisor is responsible for the following assignments and operations:
  • Oversee the daily operations of the facility, ensuring the program runs smoothly and efficiently.
  • Lead and supervise a multidisciplinary team of staff including human service technicians, clinical staff, and case managers.
  • Ensure adequate staffing levels across all shifts including hiring, training and scheduling staff, as well as addressing staffing shortages or concerns.
  • Conduct regular team meetings, performance evaluations, and training to promote continuous staff improvement.
  • Provide training in crisis management, de-escalation techniques and best practices, ensuring that staff are equipped to handle emergency situations effectively while maintaining a safe environment.
  • Ensure clients receive timely and appropriate care that meets their needs through comprehensive assessments and ongoing support.
  • Oversee the timely and accurate completion of documentation including risk assessments, progress notes, incident reports and other required records.
  • Manage client admissions and discharges, including appropriate referrals and coordination with community-based resources, outpatient services and follow-up care.
  • Promote a client-centered approach that encourages family involvement, ensuring that clients and their families are informed, supported and involved in the treatment process.
  • Conduct regular audits of client records to ensure services are aligned with regulatory requirements and agency guidelines.
  • Ensure safety protocols and emergency procedures are followed, adjusting protocols as needed to ensure the physical and emotional well-being of clients and staff.
  • Collaborate and build effective working relationships with medical staff, crisis team, and inpatient hospital liaison to coordinate care and ensure client needs are met.
  • Work with Director of Adult Mental Health to regularly evaluate program outcomes, assess client feedback and implement necessary changes or improvements to services and processes.Establish and maintain strong relationships with community partners
  • including law enforcement agencies, hospital emergency departments, inpatient psychiatric units and other stakeholders.
  • Provide clinical coverage and direct treatment when needed, offering therapeutic support and interventions for clients in crisis.
  • Provide backup staffing coverage as needed, as well as after hours on call coverage
  • Other duties and responsibilities as needed and assigned.

Compensation

Base Rate
The base rate for fully licensed clinicians is calculated with a starting annual rate of $75,500 plus credit for years of full-licensure experience as defined below:

  • $75,500.00 to $97,87.84 per year is the approved base rate range.
  • 1% per year for each year of full licensure.
  • $3,000 Spanish-language incentive annual stipend (paid bi-weekly) available. Must pass a Spanish assessment.

For current DBH employees working as a fully-licensed clinician, the base wages will not be adjusted as they are already in line with this compensation structure.

Supervisory Stipend

In addition to base wages, the CRU Program Supervisor will receive a $400.00 per bi-weekly pay period supervisory stipend ($200 for program supervision, $100 for oversight of a 24-hour facility, $100 for scheduling and staffing a 24-hour program). If the successful candidate leaves a supervisory role, the stipend will be discontinued.


Required Experience, Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

Education and Experience

  • Graduation from a college or university with a Master's degree in social work, psychology, counseling or other related human service field equivalent is required.
  • Minimum 3-5 years of experience in a behavioral health setting.
  • Experience in crisis intervention, receiving center or psychiatric emergency services is highly preferred.
  • Supervisory or administrative experience preferred.

Licenses and/or Certifications

Licensed in the State of Utah as a Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW), Psychologist, Clinical Mental Health Counselor, or equivalent. Must maintain required continuing education credits for both Clinical License and Clinical Supervisor.

Valid and unrestricted Utah Driver's License (within 30 days of hire if applicant is from out-of-state) with no DUI/DWI or reckless driving convictions in the last five years.

Pass the State's Background Criminal Investigation (BCI) which includes digital fingerprint clearance prior to start of employment.

Must pass a urinary drug screen upon employment.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

The CRU Program Supervisor must possess the following skills and abilities:

  • Clinical expertise in working with serious mental illness, substance use, and with individuals and families undergoing acute episodes of psychiatric distress.
  • Excellent crisis management skills, with the ability to assess situations quickly and guide staff through intervention and de-escalation strategies
  • Ability to maintain a calm and professional demeanor in stressful or emotionally charged situations
  • Strong supervisory and team-building skills
  • Excellent problem-solving and decision-making skills, with the ability to make sound clinical and operational judgments
  • Strong organizational and practice management skills
  • Strong communication skills, both verbal and written
  • Ability to work independently and effectively
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other staff and community agencies
  • Flexibility in days and hours available for scheduled work, including evenings and weekends.

The selected candidate must successfully pass a pre-employment criminal background check and drug screening. DBH will not hire individuals currently using illegal drugs or abusing alcohol; therefore, making employment at DBH conditional upon successfully passing pre-employment drug screening by providing a valid sample. Candidates who are offered employment are required to report for a drug screen at an Intermountain WorkMed location within 24 hours of being requested to do so by the DBH Human Resources Department.

Work Environment and Schedule

Typical office setting with typical climate controls. Tasks require variety of physical activities, not generally involving muscle strain, related to walking, standing, stooping, sitting, reaching, talking, hearing and seeing essential to successful completion of typical duties. Common eye, hand, finger dexterity must exist. Mental application utilizes memory for details, verbal instructions, emotional stability, discriminating thinking and guided problem solving.

This is a full-time position and is normally assigned to weekdays. This position is in a facility that operates 24 hours per day, 7 days per week and may be required to provide coverage for any shifts if there are staff shortages. DBH reserves the right to require overtime, weekend work, and/or assignment to evening or night shifts, depending upon operational need. Some in and out of state travel may be required.
