What are the responsibilities and job description for the Afterschool Youth Mentor - culturally responsive - 10-20 hrs per week position at Day One Tech STEM?

Join Our Team at Day One and Day One Tech STEM for the 2024-25 School Year!

We are hiring for the Fall season. You may choose to move on or continue with us.

At Day One, we offer a unique work experience that blends mentorship, self-empowerment, and youth support throughout our programs. Founded and led by our communities of color, we are dedicated to making a difference in the lives of underserved youth.

NEW POSITIONS WILL HAVE LIMITED UP-FRONT TRAINING as we begin the school season, but have training every week throughout the season. Experience and or Drive/Ambition is required.

Primary Duties:

  • Plan and run youth programs in ROBOTICS, MUSIC, ART, VIDEO GAMES, CODING, GRAPHIC DESIGN, and SLIME!
  • Run afterschool programs at nearby schools in East County (and some in the Portland Metro area) with a deeply ingrained culturally responsive, trauma-informed approach, showing our respect for the unique needs of each child while Implementing whole-brain teaching, the engineering design process, and play therapy to create safe, empowering spaces for kids.
  • Help traditionally underserved youth (Mainly Black, Brown, Immigrant, and Refugee backgrounds) access opportunities for self-growth and empowerment.
  • Use entry-level technology, toys and arts to create critical thinking skills and a safe place to learn.

Position Details:

  • Part-Time Work: 10-20 hours per week (we work with you to find a schedule that fits your goals).
  • Transportation Support: We help ensure you can get to work.
  • Mentorship & Financial Wellness: Access to programs designed for young adults.
  • Snacks & Food: Available onsite at our training space.
  • Access to Technology: Including a music and recording studio.
  • Project-Oriented Work: Gain experience and add valuable projects to your resume or CV.
  • Networking Opportunities: Connect with other employers and professionals.
  • Growth Potential: Learn from a startup tech company and help shape our future.
  • Planning Time: We provide robust time for preparation and development.
  • Flexible Schedule: Work with us to create a schedule that works for you.
  • Community Impact: Serve in a way that values your story and experience.

What We’re Looking For: We seek individuals with lived experiences similar to the kids we serve. If you are passionate about sharing your story, working towards personal and professional goals, and inspiring youth and families.

We also seek people who are highly adaptable to change. The world of afterschool can be turbulent and not often the same from day to day, and the kids we work with are from communities of high trauma with variable levels of energy and focus.

We are also a start-up that tries to find new approaches to solving problems to old issues.

If you cannot adjust without a considerable structure then afterschool direct service work is not for you. However, if you are structured and appreciate a healthy amount of chaos, to grow and expand your perspective while providing structure to systems, then this can be a good place. If you appreciate solving problems on your toes and adapting sometimes immediately to challenges, then afterschool is for you.

Why Work With Us? When you join Day One, you’ll also become part of our one-of-a-kind Day One Mentorship Program for young adults. We’re here to help you align your work with your personal goals, providing:

  • Access to video and music equipment.
  • Networking opportunities.
  • Internal and external grants (including an internal grant for young entrepreneurs).
  • And much more! Our goal is to empower people so they can, in turn, empower others.

Why Day One? At Day One, we’re not just an organization—we’re a community that strives to be better every day. Join us to find a truly unique work experience where your story and skills can make a real difference.
