Culp’s Café is a one-of-a-kind eatery paying homage to the small soda fountains and lunch counters found throughout Dayton in the early 1900s. The core of Dayton History’s mission is to educate and preserve. As a part of Dayton History, Culp’s Café’s primary goal is to both immerse our guests in a welcoming, entertaining, historic, and educational experience.

Basic Function:

This position exists to ensure our guests have a high-quality and enjoyable experience by providing a warm greeting, accurately taking orders, and serving hot and cold non-alcoholic beverages, milkshakes and other soda fountain favorites, and simple cocktails.

General Responsibilities:

• Greet guests and accurately take food and beverage orders
• Process payment from customers
• Pour and serve non-alcoholic beverages such as fountain drinks, coffee, and juices as well as simple cocktails such as mimosas and Bloody Marys
• Create and serve soda fountain favorites such as milkshakes, floats, and phosphates
• Verify identification and requirements of customers
• Make suggestions based on customer tastes and preferences
• Keep soda counter area and utensils neat and clean
• Answer guests’ questions and ensure they have everything they need
• Build rapport with customers to create a positive atmosphere
• Answer basic questions about Culp’s Cafe and Carillon Historical Park
• Communicate customer feedback to the appropriate staff
• Additional duties as assigned by management

Line of Communication and Accountability:

This position reports to the Restaurant General Manager.

• Language Ability: Ability to read and comprehend simply instructions, short correspondence, and memos. Ability to write simple correspondence. Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations, to customers, clients, and other employees of the organization.

• Math Ability: Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume. Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry.

• Reasoning Ability: Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.

• Computer Skills: To perform this job successfully, an individual should have knowledge of internet software and order processing systems.

• Work Environment: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally exposed to wet or humid conditions (non-weather) and work near moving mechanical parts. The noise level in the work environment is usually loud.

• Physical Demands: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand; walk; use hands and talk or hear. The employee is frequently required to reach with hands and arms and taste or smell. The employee is occasionally required to sit; climb or balance and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include depth perception and ability to adjust focus.
