What are the responsibilities and job description for the Dispatcher position at Dayton Independent School District?
PRIMARY PURPOSE:
Under the direction of the Transportation Director, assist in the routing, scheduling,
and assigning of bus driver personnel; answer questions and record actions; respond
to emergency telephone requests as appropriate; referring to supervisor as needed.
Operate a two-way radio. Maintain computerized records and files related to the
transportation program. Drive when needed.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Any combination, training, and/or experience which demonstrates ability to perform
the required duties. Bilingual preferred.
Education/Certification
High school diploma or GED
Maintain a Commercial Driver's License-Class “B” with “P” and “S” endorsement
Maintain a School Bus Driver Certification
Current Texas School Bus Driver Physical
Good attendance record
Clear criminal record and driving record
Special Knowledge/Skills
1. Good knowledge of transportation procedures and the operation and
maintenance of school buses.
2. Good knowledge of driving safety practices and traffic law and regulations
pertaining to school bus operation.
3. Good knowledge of the geography of the district.
4. Good knowledge of district operations procedures.
5. Working knowledge of two-way radio equipment.
6. Ability to operate a school bus.
7. Ability to understand and follow simple oral and written instructions.
8. Ability to get along well with children and command their respect.
9. Ability to establish and maintain harmonious working relationships between
drivers, parents, principals, and children.
10. Ability to make oral and written reports.
11. Ability to speak effectively.
12. Knowledge of office practices, scheduling, and computerized record keeping
procedures, use of office machines, such as typewriters, calculators,
computer/microcomputers and related software.
13. Assist in scheduling and coordinating a diversified school transportation
program.
14. Maintain records and prepare reports.
15. Follow oral and written instructions.
16. Enter and retrieve applicable bus transportation data using a computer/
microcomputer.
17. Possess a mechanical aptitude.
18. Physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.
MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:
19. Maintain dispatch board/roster for field trips, excursions, and district staff trips.
20. Listen to voice mail for the purpose of determining departmental absences and
securing substitutes.
21. Plan and prepare documents (reports, records) for the purpose of answering
questions and recording actions.
22. Check bus routes to ensure integrity of schedules.
23. Maintain a variety of records and files related to the transportation program.
24. Dispatch drivers and mechanics to regular and emergency duties for the
purpose of responding to emergency telephone requests and trip orders.
25. Monitor communication between the office and the bus drivers in the field for
the purpose of assisting school bus drivers.
26. Handle routine details and phone inquiries not requiring immediate attention
of supervisor for the purpose of efficient department operations.
27. Supervises distribution of keys, First Aid kits and the cleaning of buses.
28. Perform other duties as assigned.

Working Conditions
Mental Demands/Physical Demands/Environmental Factors:
Maintain emotional control under stress. Occasional district travel, occasional
prolonged and irregular hours. Ability to read, communicate verbally, understand
verbal and written directions.
