Job Summary
This position is in the Office of the Executive Secretary, Office of Public Records and Archives. The overall mission of the Office of Public Records and Archives is to schedule, collect, store, and manage records of the District government through the services of the District of Columbia Archives, Records Center, and the Library of Government Information.
The purpose of this position is to perform the full range of professional archival work, which involves surveying, appraising, accessioning, scheduling, identifying, and preserving the historical and permanently valuable records of the District government in the District of Columbia Archives. The work also involves making immediate provisions for those records that have sufficient historical value and warrant permanent preservation, which requires incumbent to select, preserve, describe, and make available the permanently valuable records of the District of Columbia.
Duties And Responsibilities
Surveys, appraises, schedules, and preserves the historical and permanently valuable records of the District government. Prepares, reviews, and revises records retention schedules to assist agencies in managing the life cycle of records. Reviews and analyzes the administrative activities of agencies in relation to the creation of records, and the mission, functions, services of the agencies as related to records they create and/or maintain. Collects and coordinates the transfer and accession of historical and permanently valuable records into the Archives. Prepares chronicles that document the creation, legal authority, functions, roles, services, activities, decisions, duties, and responsibilities of agencies.
Provides reference and research service to agencies, scholars, and other researchers seeking information on records in the Archives. Develops guidelines to collect the metadata on information contained in the records and to manage the intellectual control of records in the archives. Prepares and presents papers and lectures on the functions, services, and activities of the Office of Public Records. Prepares information manage, scope and content, historical research reports on the records in the DC Archives, Records Center, and Library of Governmental Information.
Qualifications And Education
Bachelor's degree in archival science or bachelor's degree with a major that includes 18 semester hours in archival science, history and/or in political science or government, and 12 semester hours in one or any combination of the following: archival science, history, American civilization, economics, political science, public administration, or government. OR Combination of education and experience - at least 30 semester hours that include courses as shown above, plus appropriate experience or additional education.
In addition, this position requires Specialized Experience that equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled.To be creditable, one (1) year of specialized experience must have been equivalent to at least the next lower grade level in the normal line of progression.

Work is performed in an office setting, although the incumbent’s duties require visits to other agencies and records repositories.
