What are the responsibilities and job description for the Hydrographic/Topographic Surveyor position at Dean Marine & Excavating Inc.?
The Hydrographic Surveyor supports dredging and construction projects by performing hydrographic and topographic surveys. Responsible for performing hydrographic and topographic surveys and instrumentation positioning. Processing, interpretation, and display of results information.
Reporting to the Project Manager, this position requires the ability to work in direct communication with general contractors, government representatives, superintendents, site quality control and safety managers, and crew members. The focus of the position is to confirm dredged quantities, complete required surveys as dictated by project requirements, and maintain survey equipment and survey boat/trailer in good working order. The surveyor adheres to quality and safety requirements.
Essential Functions:
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each of the following satisfactorily.
- Uphold the Company’s commitment to an injury-free workplace; lead and model safe work practices
- Follow all safety rules and regulations as well as all company policies and procedures
- Work safely around machinery; observe and instruct others in proper equipment use; use/wear all required PPE
- Provide dredge with accurate surveys and vessel guidance to ensure accurate production measurements and correct channel location
- Set up hydrographic survey equipment and demonstrate proficiency in operating small survey vessels
- Collect pre- and post-dredge survey data processing and volume calculations
- Create the dredge screens utilized by the operator
- Act as the company’s QC representative on survey-related work
- Ensure quality control and quality assurance of survey data, field checks, calibrations, and survey results
- Take active steps in the preparation, standardization, and maintenance of the Survey Guidelines and Procedures
- Ability to read and understand plans and specifications.
- Works with the Project Manager and subcontractors, etc., to properly prepare for project close-out.
- Completes punch list items in a timely fashion.
- Maintain survey equipment and survey boat/trailer in good working order.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Marine Science, Survey, or related field preferred
- Ability to travel and work on-site at field locations
- Able to safely work on the water in small boats and vessels
- A minimum of three years of experience running single and multi-beam hydrographic surveys preferred
- Excellent safety, mechanical, and leadership skills
- Experience in Hypack Survey and DredgePack preferred
- Proficient in Microsoft Excel and Word
- 30-Hour OSHA Certificate preferred
- Ability to meet physical requirements of the position as outlined in the job description
- Must be able to successfully pass all pre-employment testing (drug test, fit test) in addition to random drug and alcohol testing
Other Physical Requirements:
- Ability to wear Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) (hard hat, eye and ear protection, safety vest, gloves, dust mask or respirator, fall protection gear, etc.)
- Ability to work in varying outdoor weather conditions
- Ability to lift and carry up to 50lb
