Department: Water/Wastewater Engineering
Location: 10th Avenue Service Center
Utilizes engineering principles, methods, and techniques specific to natural gas and water utilities to effectively plan, evaluate, and design distribution systems. The role encompasses comprehensive civil engineering tasks, as well as quality assurance and control, system planning, modeling, and project management, including coordination and inspection of gas and water systems. This position may also provide support for the wastewater collections system, contributing to overall system efficiency and reliability.
Key Responsibilities
- Scope of work includes all phases civil engineering functions including system planning/design/layout, modeling and coordination, metering, construction, flow and pressure testing and compliance/regulatory functions for gas, water, and/or wastewater utility systems.
- Prepares plans, specifications, work orders and cost estimates for construction and maintenance of gas, water, and/or wastewater utility systems.
- Communicates and assists customers and developers on commercial, industrial, and residential services and main extensions.
- Reviews plans and specifications by outside engineers, architects and developers concerning utility improvements and/or extensions for conformity to DU requirements.
- Complies with all federal and state regulatory requirements and meets reporting deadlines on assigned projects.
- Collects and compiles data, prepares, and presents technical reports and feasibility studies.
- Uses design software and equipment to perform flow modeling of the wastewater systems.
- Coordinates interrelated projects with other DU supervisors, engineers, or outside city/state representatives.
- Assists supervisor with budget development and reports related to short and long range plans for the wastewater collections system.
- Adheres to all safety policies and codes to ensure safe working practices for employees.
- Mentors Wastewater Utility Engineer I & II positions to enhance growth within the department.
- Reviews projects for Wastewater Utility Engineer I & II positions.
- Bachelor degree (B.S.) in Civil, Mechanical, or related engineering field from an accredited college or university with 8 years of related engineering experience with gas, water, and/or wastewater utility systems. PE preferred, but not required.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite (Microsoft Outlook, Word & Excel) as required to perform job tasks.
- Ability to read, interpret and comprehend documents such as contracts, industry journals, safety procedures, operating and maintenance instructions, drawings and procedure manuals.
- Ability to analyze and prepare engineering and technical reports and business correspondence.
- Ability to interact and effectively communicate with supervisors, customers, co-workers, mid-level representatives of governmental agencies, contractors, developers, product vendors and other professional groups or contacts in the community.
- Ability to effectively present information to management, public groups and/or Municipal Utilities Board (MUB).
- Must be able to use specialized software applications for ESRI GIS, customer inquiries, modeling mapping, GPS, and pretreatment.
- Ability to apply routine and complex mathematical equations to perform various Civil, Environmental and/or Mechanical Engineering tasks, as related to the gas and water engineering utility field.
- Valid Alabama Driver's License; CPR/First Aid Certification; Customer Service Skills and applicable safety training as scheduled.
