Job Description

Experienced Registered Ultrasound Technologist with High Risk, and OB Scans in MFM and OBGYN, Highly Preferred (Full-Time: Monday-Friday 8 am – 5 pm

Job Description

The MFM sonographer works under the direction of the Perinatologist, Radiologist, and/or Physician of the assigned modality, along with Director of Operations and management. The high-risk OB Sonographer has a commitment to providing high-quality diagnostic fetal ultrasounds, fetal echocardiography, procedures, and GYN ultrasound scans. The high-risk OB Sonographer works independently and with other members of the healthcare team to provide a comprehensive examination in an outpatient setting.

Job Responsibility

  • Performs all ultrasound procedures in strict accordance with currently approved practices as outlined in department policy and procedure manuals, or through understanding of the physicians’ expectations, complying with all applicable federal, state, local and other regulatory requirements.
  • Assists Physicians with ultrasound-guided biopsies and procedures.
  • Communicates to the patient the nature of the procedure and answers questions clarifying the procedure for the patient.
  • Assures patients’ rights and privacy are maintained.
  • Responsible for proper documentation and maintenance of all required department records
  • Provides orientation and training to new sonographers as directed.
  • Actively participates in teaching ultrasound students.
  • Performs other related duties incidental to the work therein.
  • Produces high quality diagnostic images in a timely manner while providing excellent patient care.
  • Treats patients and customers, including family members or care providers that may accompany the patient, with courtesy, professionalism, and respect.
  • Monitors patients’ well-being during exam; recognizes patient discomfort or medical problems and takes appropriate action.
  • Understands the methods used to generate ultrasound data and the theory and operation of the instruments that detect, display, and store the acoustic information generated in clinical examinations.
  • Understands the potential bio-effects associated with ultrasound exposure.
  • Checks patient history, and obtains appropriate signed waivers, if necessary.
  • Consults with radiologist/physician when necessary to determine appropriate scanning procedure.
  • Completes all paperwork and exam reports associated with technical procedures.
  • Responds to physician questions and needs regarding patient procedures.
  • Checks referral for appropriate study based on patient history.
  • Keeps ultrasound exam rooms and dressing booths clean and properly stocked with supplies.
  • Assures room is ready prior to the patient entering the room (i.e equipment is operable, all supplies are readily available, and has been appropriately cleaned and prepped)
  • Handles delicate situations (fetal demise, cancerous pathology, etc.) in a supportive and empathetic manner (“good bedside manner”), while maintaining appropriate confidentiality regarding exam outcomes or potential issues
  • Keeps patient schedule and accommodates add-on patients when requested.
  • Communicates delays or changes in the schedule to the appropriate person(s).
  • Exercises sound judgment regarding image quality; seeks guidance from radiologist/ Perinatologist if concerned about what scan reveals and obtains prior approval before doing additional scans/views to better diagnose the patient’s possible pathology.
  • Guides patients through a sometimes-difficult process by kindly talking them through the steps and answering their questions and concerns regarding exam procedures.
  • Participates in projects and completes other tasks as assigned by management.
  • All equipment must be properly disinfected per protocol after each patient, Replacing linen after each patient. All linen bags in every room and waiting room must be discarded daily at the end of shift.
  • All other duties as assigned.

Job Qualification

  • High School Diploma, or the equivalent
  • Completion of a certified program in Ultrasonography
  • Significant experience in OB/GYN scanning, MFM experience preferred.
  • Satisfactory completion of at least two (2) years in Allied Health Education
  • Maintain or eligible for registry certification with the American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography (ARDMS)
  • RDMS registry must be obtained within first year of employment.
  • Provide evidence of continuing education credits to fulfill accreditation requirements.
  • 1-3 years of technical experience, required.
