Position Purpose
The Network Technician provides the car Equipment Department with technology support including but not limited to: installation, troubleshooting, configuration and repair of the car borne network, including managed and unmanaged switches and routers. This position is also responsible for troubleshooting, configuration and repair of the car borne portion of the car to wayside Wi-Fi system. He/she will maintain/track the software levels of all; microprocessor controlled systems on the cars and install software upgrades/modifications as directed. He/she will also act as system administrator, assigning passwords and managing Portable Test Equipment (PTE), Bench Test Equipment (BTE), and Automated Test Equipment (ATE).

The duties and responsibilities of this position are generally performed in a rail car maintenance shop, in all types of lighting and ventilation conditions. Personal protective equipment is provided to protect against fumes, sustained high noise levels, dusts, airborne debris and other hazards that may be encountered. Occasionally, work must be performed in rail storage yards, along active rights of way on bridges, adjacent to live third rail and in subways. The environment requires access to confined spaces and the employee must be willing to become qualified for confined space entry by taking the confined space training provided.

Essential Duties And Responsibilities
- Troubleshoot and repair PTE, BTE and ATE.
- Assist in troubleshoot and repairing of car borne diagnostic system network issues.
- Assist in troubleshoot and repairing of complex car borne Wi-Fi system malfunctions.
- Install software revisions as directed.
- Manage car borne software revisions, ensure that updates are installed as scheduled, and maintain electronic records of revision levels. Maintain narratives of revisions.
- Act as system administrator for car borne systems; assign, and recover lost passwords.
- Serve as the subject matter expert for vendor supplied PTE, BTE and ATE.
- Manage PTE, BTE, and ATE, to include but not limited to: calibrations, inventory, assigning PTE, assigning/recovering passwords, and managing software revisions.
- Arrange for outside repair of car borne network components, PTE, BTE and ATE as directed.
- Maintain contact with carbuilder and his subcontractors to incorporate upgrades and to solicit help when needed.
- Administer warranties on car borne network components, BTE, PTE, and ATE.
- Train and assist shop ET’s to solve complex technology problems.
- Recommend spare part inventory for BTE, PTE and ATE.
- Maintain and Monitor software licensing records.
- Must be able to work either shift, as assigned.
- Work with Information Services department to troubleshoot any Wi-Fi issues related to the Wayside Wi-Fi.
- Assists in maintaining a safe and secure work environment by participating in required training, recognizing and reporting hazards and suspicious activity, and using all required personal protective equipment.
- Perform other related duties as required and assigned.

Required
Education and/or Experience
- HS diploma AND 5 years of experience troubleshooting, repairing and configuring network communications items such as: radios, switches and routers
- Knowledge of Linux or Windows operating systems
- Knowledge and proficiency of Programmable Logic Controllers
- Knowledge of spreadsheet software and word processing software
- Associates degree preferably in Computer Science or satisfactory completion of a networking trade school
- Knowledge of programming with C, C in Lab View
- Knowledge of Wireshark network protocol analyzer or comparable program
