Position Purpose

The position of Electronic Technician is responsible for installation, maintenance, inspection, and repair of all electronic facilities at PATCO.  Th ese include, but are not limited to, telephone system, public address (PA) system, closed circuit television (CCTV) system, supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) system, centralized traffic control (CTC) system, security systems, fire detection / alarm systems, communications transmission system, and related electronic equipment.  The position of Power & Signals Electronic Technician will perform other related duties as assigned.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • The individual for this position performs all functions related to installation and / or maintenance on electronic facilities such as digital and analog telephone equipment, PA equipment, CCTV equipment, SCADA equipment, CTC equipment, security equipment, fire detection / alarm equipment, transmission (fiber optic, coaxial, copper) cables and fiber optic equipment, all located in a central control center, substations, node houses, passenger stations, shop and administration buildings, subway tunnels, the Ben Franklin Bridge, and interconnected via aerial pole lines, underground duct banks, and conduits along PATCO’s right-of-way.
  • The individual for this position is responsible for maintaining equipment which operates on both DC and AC voltages, with voltage ranging from 110 volts to 69,000 volts AC and 800 volts DC.
  • The individual for this position will perform snow shoveling / pushing for all facilities of PATCO as necessary.
  • The individual for this position will assist in maintaining a safe and secure work environment by participating in required training, recognizing and reporting hazards and suspicious activity, and using all required personal protective equipment.
  • The individual for this position will perform other related duties as assigned.

This is a safety sensitive position and is subject to all provisions of the DRPA / PATCO’S Substance Abuse Testing and Control Policy including random drug testing and periodic physical testing requirements and the federally mandated CDL Drug and Alcohol random testing requirements.

    Education and / or Experience

    Required :

  • High school diploma or general education degree (GED), preferably from a vocational school.
  • Minimum of three (3) years’ experience as a journey person electronic technician.
  • Must be able to proficiently read and interpret electronic circuit diagrams, blue-prints, and other construction drawings relating to electronic equipment, both analog and digital.
  • Must be able to pass a proficiency examination that addresses all of the required knowledge
  • Must be able to work a variety of schedules, including evening, night or weekend work and holidays as needed.
  • Must be able to operate the necessary test equipment to perform all the maintenance and construction activities for the above referenced facilities including basic computer skills necessary for use of software to monitor and troubleshoot electronic systems.
  • Must be able to qualify by the Transit Services Department in the “Rules and Instructions for Conducting Operations” as it pertains to operating or piloting maintenance of way equipment on the mainline or yard tracks.
  • This position requires a current Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) Class A or B with air brakes from the state of New Jersey, Pennsylvania or Delaware. Applicants who lack the appropriate CDL at the time of application, but who otherwise are deemed qualified for the position may be considered.  If the selected candidate does not have the appropriate CDL at the time of selection, he or she must obtain said CDL within the orientation period.  Failure to provide proof of the CDL, which is required to perform the essential duties of the job, for any reason within six (6) months from the candidate’s date of hire will result in the immediate termination of employment.  Note that the DRPA / PATCO will provide the formal CDL training resources during the candidate’s initial six months of employment.
  • Must have good oral and written communication skills in order for the incumbent to communicate with all levels of the organization.
  • Preferred :

  • Experience in electronic equipment maintenance or construction with a Class 1 railroad, rail transit property or contractor is preferred.
  • Physical Requirements

    The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.

    Individuals in this position require a full range of physical motion and the ability to lift heavy loads : equipment and material components in excess of seventy-five (75) pounds (150 pounds in a two person lift).  Must be able to climb ladders, including but not limited to rung and step ladders.  This position requires the incumbent to be able to walk, stoop, bend, crawl, ascend / descend stairs, steps, and ladders, etc.  The employee must have normal day and nighttime vision, corrected or uncorrected, and have normal hearing, with or without device.  The employee must be able to withstand heights of up to 380 feet, i.e., necessary for work on top of the Ben Franklin Bridge Towers for radio system.  The employee must be able to climb up and down transit car(s) with a step height of as much as three (3) feet, lift leg(s) a height of twenty-four (24) inches to clear third rail by stepping over same, and perform in a confined space, i.e., electrical manhole.  Individuals in this position must also be able to pass a physical for use of a respirator.

    Working Conditions

    This position requires the incumbent to work both indoors and outdoors in all types of lighting and weather conditions including but not limited to, heat, sun, rain, snow and ice.  Protective clothing, eye protection, hearing protection, dust masks and respirators are provided to protect against the elements such as, chemical splashing, airborne debris, toxic fumes, and sustained loud or high pitch noises that are encountered in the railroad environment.  Hearing protection will be issued when appropriate, and whereas, the wearing of such protection does not pose a safety risk to the employee during the performance of the essential job functions.
