General Description of the Position
The Director of Bands is responsible for the administration of the total band program which includes but is not limited to scheduling and organization of all band performances and rehearsals, coordination of travel, fundraising, recruiting, supervision, cultivating relationships with alumni and the community, building & maintaining a nationally recognized band program, advising & mentoring of band members along with monitoring them academically and socially. The ideal candidate will be a highly qualified musician with a strong and effective commitment to music education and conducting.
Essential Functions & Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Essential Functions
1. Provide overall leadership of the band staff and their responsibilities including band arranging, field show design, program development, a scholarship program, and fundraising.
2. Coordinate band activities with the Athletic Department.
3. Recruiting, advising / mentoring activities, and promoting the band within the state, nationally, and internationally, and must be significantly active in creative and / or research activities consistent with all faculty appointments.
4. Organize, direct, and administer a comprehensive university band program including Wind Ensemble, Marching, Concert, Jazz, and Pep bands.
5. Teach courses, as assigned, within the Music Program based on strengths and experience. Courses may include Conducting, Jazz Improvisation, and Music Education. Other duties may be assigned.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
1. Ability to direct, develop, write drill, chart half-time shows, and arrange music for a show-style marching band. Demonstrate an ability to develop, conduct, and maintain a strong instrumental program that includes marching, symphonic, jazz, Pep bands, wind, and other small ensembles.
2. Teach band courses.
3. Supervise Assistant Band directors, staff, and members.
4. Adhere to university scholarship and recruitment guidelines.
Qualification Standards
1. Experience as either a Director of Bands or Assistant Director of Bands is required.
2. Master's degree in music and / or a related field is required, a Doctorate degree is preferred.
3. At least three (3) years of experience at a university or 10 years' experience in middle or secondary education.
4. Demonstrate arranging for marching band by supplying at least 3 scores for arrangements you have done.
5. Demonstrate knowledge of drills by supplying at least 3 charts of marching band field drills you have designed along with a video of those field shows.
