Job Summary :

The Controller is responsible for the day-to-day accounting and financial reporting functions, ensuring compliance with GAAP, nonprofit accounting standards, and internal policies. This role supervises a team of three and ensures the accuracy and integrity of financial records while supporting financial planning and strategic decision-making.

Supervision Received :

Receives general direction from Vice President of Finance. May receive direction from the Chief Executive Officer.

Supervision exercised :

Supervises the staff of the Accounting Department

Duties and responsibilities :

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Oversee all accounting operations, including general ledger maintenance, reconciliations, and financial reporting.
  • Ensure the timely and accurate preparation of monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements.
  • Manage the organization's financial close process, ensuring completeness and accuracy.
  • Provide financial analysis and reports to Agency leadership.
  • Support the development of the annual budget and assist in long-term financial planning.
  • Ensure compliance with GAAP, IRS regulations (Form 990), and nonprofit financial best practices.
  • Maintain and improve internal controls to safeguard assets.
  • Assist with the annual audit process, working with external auditors and preparing audit schedules.
  • Ensure adherence to all grant and donor-restricted fund requirements.
  • Work with HR to ensure accurate financial reporting of payroll / benefit -related expenses.
  • Oversee the AP / AR functions, ensuring timely payments and collections.
  • Ensure proper classification and recording of revenue, including donations, grants, and earned income.
  • Supervise, mentor, and develop a finance team
  • Conduct regular performance evaluations and provide professional development opportunities.
  • Foster a culture of accountability, efficiency, and continuous improvement
  • Additional duties as assigned

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE AND OTHER QUALIFICATIONS :

Acknowledgement :

Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field required; CPA or CMA preferred.

7 years of experience in accounting or finance, with at least 3 years in a supervisory role.

Strong knowledge of GAAP, nonprofit financial reporting, and IRS compliance.

Proficiency in financial management software (e.g., Micro, Blackbaud, MIP, Sage Intacct, QuickBooks Nonprofit, or NetSuite).

Experience in nonprofit accounting, grant management and fund accounting preferred.

Excellent analytical, organizational, and leadership skills.

Ability to communicate financial information to non-financial stakeholders
