The Phlebotomist/Lab Aide has an integral part in the clinical support team by assisting patients, hospital personnel, and physicians. The Phlebotomist is responsible for collecting blood specimens on all patients without harming the patient or disturbing patient care. It is necessary to ensure proper blood collection technique so as not to affect the integrity of the sample to be analyzed. To be successful, the Phlebotomist is an effective communicator and good listener in order to help relieve anxiety and stress in the patient. The Phlebotomist is trained in laboratory safety and must adhere to strict policies, procedures, and proper infection control techniques. The Phlebotomist is attentive to detail, has excellent manual dexterity, works well under pressure, and enjoys working with people.
- Collect blood samples from patients.
- Practice proper patient identification.
- Label vials with patient names and dates.
- Decipher the best method for drawing blood depending on the specific patient.
- Expect to work with a large number of patients varying in age and health status.
- Be friendly, courteous and sympathetic when it comes to working with patients.
- Practice infection control standards at all time when working with patients and equipment.
- High School graduate or equivalent.
- Must be able to read, write, and have good interpersonal communication skills, both written and verbal.
- Must have blood-drawing skills. Medical or laboratory knowledge helpful.
- Must be able to multitask, work in high stress situations, and be detail oriented.
- CPR certification helpful, but not required.
