DMEA is looking for a Journeyman Lineman at our Montrose and Read, CO location

QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE:

Must have and maintain a valid Class A Commercial driver's license (will be required to obtain a Colorado CDL upon successful completion of hire). Must have or be able to obtain within the first six months of employment a valid IBEW Journeyman Lineman Certificate. Must have recent experience performing electrical line construction and maintenance work. High school diploma or equivalent required. Must have basic computer skills and legible handwriting. All Journeyman Linemen hired after September 1993 must reside within 30 miles of their assigned service area center.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

Delta-Montrose Electric Association reserves the right to change or modify the duties and essential functions of this position at any time.

In an efficient and professional manner, and in accordance with the DMEA/IBEW Labor Agreement and DMEA Accident Prevention Manual:

  • Constructs underground and overhead transmission and distribution lines: including but not limited to digging pole and anchor holes; framing poles; setting poles and anchors; stringing, sagging, and connecting conductor; installing armor rods, down guys, and pad mount gear; and performing related tasks of new construction of energized and de-energized lines. Installs, removes, maintains and repairs poles, steel towers, crossarms, pins, insulators, hardware, guys, transformer racks, switch racks, and outdoor substation structures in connection with construction, operation and maintenance of electrical facilities.
  • Maintains both underground and overhead distribution and transmission electric system using rubber or synthetic insulation material by replacing damaged transformers, breakers, regulators, conductor, insulators, meter loops, poles, switching or sectionalizing gear and related equipment on energized or de-energized lines. Locate faults.
  • Performs various duties related to customer service including reading meters, making service changes, troubleshooting service outages, making delinquent account collections, carrying out voltage tests and completing outage reports.
  • Performs related duties daily including taking inventory, accounting for materials used, loading and unloading materials, and inspecting distribution and transmission lines as part of a preventative maintenance program.
  • Instructs and trains apprentices in all phases of overhead and underground work performed by linemen
  • Participates fully as a crew member in all job discussions.
  • Responsible for the proper care of all equipment used in conjunction with line work.
  • Installs and removes street lighting equipment.
  • Takes overtime and call-outs in accordance with the Labor Agreement.
  • Trims trees around transmission and distribution lines as needed.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

Knows, understands and applies all OSHA regulations and safety rules necessary to perform the job. Must be able to apply first aid techniques.

Understands and follows established electric construction and maintenance specifications including those of the Rural Utilities Service, the National Electrical Code and those adopted by Delta-Montrose Electric Association.

Must know how to operate a two-way radio under established procedure and FCC rules. Must be able to accurately read and interpret staking sheets and maps on a daily basis.

Understands and applies the concept of providing quality electric services to DMEA customers and employees and agrees to maintain a continuing commitment to superior people-to-people service.

Requires the ability to develop plans, procedures and goals; present information to others; work cooperatively; and work under stress to complete projects accurately within reasonable deadlines.

ESSENTIAL PHYSICAL AND MENTAL REQUIREMENTS:

Thirty percent (30%) of the time is spent standing, thirty percent (30%) sitting, and forty percent (40%) walking. Will occasionally lift up to 100 pounds. Carrying up to 50 pounds is necessary when moving equipment from vehicle to work site. When doing pole work or moving a transformer, it may be necessary to push and pull approximately 150 pounds.

Operating controls is done constantly while sitting in a vehicle driving and operating machinery. Climbing poles or ladders using feet, legs, hands, and arms is done frequently.

Balancing is done constantly while walking and standing on rough and uneven terrain. Occasionally must stoop, kneel, crouch, and crawl. Reaching and handling are done frequently. Finger dexterity and the ability to feel are occasionally necessary while constructing or repairing lines and equipment. Talking in order to exchange ideas over a two-way radio, phone, and to communicate with other employees, contractors, and customers, both in office and outdoor settings, is done frequently. Constantly required to hear radio transmissions. Must also be able to hear faint arcing sounds or transformer humming to quickly determine how something is working.

Occasionally will need to see "near" while working on lines. It is constantly necessary to see "far" while driving, patrolling lines or constructing lines. Depth perception and color vision is essential while driving. While constructing poles and lines, depth perception and field of vision are constantly necessary.

The job may occasionally require persuasiveness, analytic ability, auditory and tactile discrimination. Due to the possible danger in this position, it is extremely important to always be alert, precise, and patient. Must exercise ingenuity while working under adverse weather conditions. Must have problem solving abilities, spatial perception, speaking ability, memory, creativity, concentration, judgment, initiative, reasoning, imagination and visual discrimination. Must be flexible and a team player.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

Regular, predictable attendance is required. Seventy-five percent (75%) of the work is performed outdoors in varying weather conditions. Work is frequently performed under hazard conditions such as adverse weather, dust in the air or exposure to sunlight or toxic chemicals. Noise level is frequently 100-120 decibels. Various mechanical and electrical hazards are present. Employees holding this position are exposed when working on a pole, and danger of electrical burns is a constant hazard.

Frequent transportation by company vehicle is required. Occasional travel by company vehicle or commercial means may be required.

DMEA dispatch positions perform a safety sensitive function; Apprentice Dispatchers are subject to drug and alcohol testing as stated in the DMEA Drug and Alcohol Testing Policy and Procedures Manual and the "All Employee Drug and Alcohol Policy."
