Position Description
The Heavy Equipment Operator will be responsible for operating and maintaining various types of heavy machinery used in railroad construction projects. This role will be crucial in ensuring the efficient and safe completion of tasks such as grading, excavation, and material transport.
Job Responsibilities:
- Operate heavy equipment with technical efficiency, including maintenance of way equipment used in railroad construction.
- Conduct routine inspections and maintenance on machinery to ensure optimal performance and safety.
- Coordinate with project managers, supervisors, and other team members to ensure project goals and deadlines are met.
- Adhere to all safety protocols and regulations to maintain a safe work environment, including reporting all accidents, incidents and near misses.
- Assist with other construction-related tasks as needed, including grading, trenching, and material handling.
- Maintain accurate records of work performed, equipment usage and any problems encountered.
- Responsible for the safe loading and unloading of construction equipment.
- Clean the machines regularly. This includes sweeping the cabs and removing trash daily, cleaning the interior weekly, and lubricating doors and windows.
- Position or move loads in response to hand or audio signals from crew members.
- Drive truck equipped with different trailer combinations: Lowboy, Flatbed and Step deck.
- Maintain completed electronic log (ELDs) and paperwork.
- Take actions to avoid potential hazards and obstructions, such as utility lines, other equipment, other workers, and falling objects.
- Other duties as assigned.
Physical Requirements and Work Conditions:
- Work in extreme all-weather conditions (hot, cold, rain, snow and sleet).
- Able to walk on uneven surfaces over sometimes great distances.
- Able to work in conditions with loud noise; work on/around heavy/moving machinery; bend, walk, stand and sit for extended time.
- Exposed to loud noise.
- May be exposed to live track/trains and high voltage.
- Must be able to lift 50 pounds.
- Must be willing to travel to various project locations.
- Availability to work 7 days a week (base will be 40 hour work week)
- Monday – Friday during the pre-construction phase.
- Must be available for field work all weekend once construction begins.
Position Requirements
Skill Requirements:
- Must be familiar with the safe operation of construction equipment, Railroad equipment preferred
- Able to work day or night shifts as required
- Knowledge of all USDOT & FMCSA safety regulations
- Ability to calculate weights of equipment with truck/trailer combo to stay within DOT permitting restrictions and guidelines
- Knowledge of FMCSA cargo securement rules and regulations
- Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
Work Experience Requirements:
- 2 years of related experience
- Experience with airbrakes and standard transmission
- Articulating Knuckle Boom NCCCO Certification preferred or able to obtain
Education Requirements:
- High school diploma or GED
