Job Overview

Democracy Docket is seeking a Reporter with strong news-gathering and writing skills and a passion for voting rights and democracy to join our News Team. The Reporter will pitch, report, and write a mix of news-driven updates, second-day follow-ups, analysis, explainers, investigative deep-dives, and newsletters, with a focus on original reporting that advances stories on the voting and democracy beat. The ability to break news is a major plus.


Key Responsibilities

  • Pitch, report, and write articles in a range of formats on voting and democracy issues.
  • Cultivate sources and stay informed on key developments related to voting rights, elections, and democracy.
  • Contribute to Democracy Docket’s daily and weekly newsletters by drafting copy, copyediting, and managing distribution through MailChimp.
  • Perform other related duties and projects as assigned.

Required Qualifications

  • 3-5 years of experience in journalism or another writing-focused role.
  • Strong reporting and writing skills with a demonstrated passion for mission-driven journalism.
  • Solid understanding of voting rights, elections, and redistricting in the courts.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and multitask effectively.
  • Strong attention to detail and excellent organizational skills.
  • Naturally inquisitive and passionate about voting rights and democracy.
  • Familiarity with AP style is preferred.
  • Experience with WordPress and/or MailChimp is a plus.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with editors, co-reporters, and other colleagues.

Education

  • Bachelor’s degree required

Work Environment
This is a full-time role based either out of our Washington, D.C. or Jersey City office. We currently operate on a hybrid schedule, with remote work on Mondays and Fridays and in-office days on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays. Exceptional candidates in other locations will be considered.
