Position Overview:
The TMA Driver is responsible for safely operating a truck equipped with a Truck Mounted Attenuator (TMA) to protect mowing crews and equipment from traffic hazards during roadside maintenance activities. This role plays a vital part in ensuring crew safety, following TxDOT traffic control protocols, and maintaining high visibility and readiness on mobile and stationary operations.
This position is assigned to the TxDOT Montgomery County Roadside Mowing Contract and involves regular travel and fieldwork along state-maintained highways within the Conroe District.
Key Responsibilities:
1. Traffic Safety Operations
- Operate a TMA-equipped shadow vehicle to shield mowing crews and equipment during daily roadside operations.
- Ensure proper positioning of the TMA according to TxDOT’s Temporary Traffic Control (TTC) standards.
- Follow daily work zones and traffic flow directions provided by the Site Supervisor or Traffic Control Lead.
2. Equipment Operation & Inspection
- Perform pre-trip and post-trip inspections of the TMA unit, including impact cushion, lights, brakes, signage, and hydraulic components.
- Conduct basic maintenance and refueling; report mechanical issues immediately.
- Maintain clear, organized records of TMA usage, mileage, fuel, and downtime.
3. Field Documentation & Compliance
- Complete daily TMA log sheets per TxDOT and project documentation requirements.
- Assist with documenting incidents, near-misses, or equipment contact when applicable.
- Comply with all TxDOT, OSHA, and company safety procedures at all times.
4. Team Coordination
- Communicate regularly with mower operators, traffic control flaggers, and site supervisors.
- Remain alert and in position to react quickly to changes in work zone conditions or emergency situations.
- Attend daily tailgate meetings and toolbox talks.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Valid Class C or higher Driver’s License with a clean driving record
- At least 1 year of professional driving experience, preferably with large work trucks or highway operations
- Ability to operate and maneuver large vehicles in live traffic and narrow shoulders
- Willingness to work outdoors in hot, humid, or inclement weather conditions
Preferred Qualifications:
- TMA Certification or TxDOT-approved TMA Training
- Knowledge of TxDOT TTC standards
- Experience working on roadside mowing, sweeping, or maintenance crews
- Familiarity with Montgomery County highways and TxDOT project expectations
Work Environment & Schedule:
- 8–10 hour shifts, Monday through Friday (occasional weekends or make-up days)
- Roadside work along FM and SH routes throughout Montgomery County
- Mobile and stationary operations under live traffic conditions
Physical Requirements:
- Ability to sit for extended periods in a vehicle
- Ability to lift 30–50 lbs for minor equipment adjustments
- Maintain focus and awareness for long durations in variable weather conditions
Compensation & Benefits:
- Competitive hourly wage, based on experience and TxDOT wage determination
