Under the direction of the Abandoned Mine Lands Unit (AMLU) Supervisor (Senior Engineering Geologist), the Engineering Geologist (EG) will be responsible for performing a variety of field and office tasks related to identifying, locating, characterizing, and remediating abandoned mine lands (AML) in California. The incumbent will be a member of a specialized interdisciplinary team that identifies physical and chemical hazards at abandoned mines using geological, geomorphological, biological, and historical mining knowledge. AMLU’s mission is to collaborate with partner agencies to protect people from abandoned mine hazards while preserving mining history and wildlife habitat.

Working Conditions
This position is located in Sacramento and may be eligible for hybrid telework in accordance with the Department of Conservation’s Telework Policy and procedures.

Desirable Qualifications
- Demonstrated education and experience in geology, mining, and or environmental conservation.
- Experience collecting geologic and other scientific data in the field.
- Experience working independently and as a member of an interdisciplinary team while maintaining a positive work environment.
- Ability to conduct field work up to two weeks per month in remote areas, hiking off-trail in hazardous terrain while carrying gear up to five miles per day, operating 4WD vehicles and camping as needed.
- Skilled in the use of Microsoft Office Suite or equivalent and knowledge or experience in ArcGIS, and on-line sourcing of information.
- Experience engaging, facilitating, and collaborating with diverse partners, such as across local, state, and/or federal agencies/departments and Tribes.
