JOB SUMMARY

This position is located in the D. C. Department of Corrections (DOC), Education, Programs and Case Management Division, Case Management Department. The DOC facilities serve as points of entry for persons who have been arraigned and committed for incarceration by the Superior Court of the District of Columbia, U.S. District Court, and any detainments under the authority of the U.S. Marshall Service. The incumbent serves as the Intake Support Assistant, responsible for clerical and administrative supportive functions to support the conduction of initial intake interviews with newly admitted inmates in order to obtain pertinent data and orient inmates to the institutional rules, regulations, procedures and program opportunities facilitating adjustment to the jail environment and assist in resolving inmate problems.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Serves as a liaison during admission between the inmates and legitimate interests internally. Conducts initial admission intake interviews with newly admitted inmates in assigned area to obtain pertinent data to assist with the custody classification according to the inmate’s respective charges by inputting the social and family data, education, religious, gang affiliations, nationality, level of reading/writing capability, etc., into the DOC database. Orients inmates to the institutional rules, regulations, procedures, and program opportunities. Places Inmates that are identified as Transgender, Intersex, or Gender Nonconforming initially in protective custody (voluntary or involuntary) in a single cell within the intake housing unit consistent with the inmate’s gender housing preference identified at intake. Forwards the Gender Housing Form to the Transgender Housing Committee (THC) and other institutional departments.

Completes a separation request memorandum when information or documents reveal a need for separation of an inmate. Submits the separation request memorandum to the Warden or designee for approval and issuance of the separation order. Ensures the separation documentation is properly entered into the DOC database. Notifies Operation’s supervisor of any inmates that have concern about safety and potential risks of being housed in general population for protective custody prior to housing placements.

QUALIFICATIONS AND EDUCATION

This position requires Specialized Experience that equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities (KSA's) to perform successfully the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the position to be filled. To be creditable, one (1) year of Specialized Experience must have been equivalent to at least the next lower grade in the normal line of progression.

Work is performed in a Correctional Facility in an office setting.

Pay Plan, Series and Grade: CS-0303-07

Duration of Appointment: Career Service – Regular Appointment.

Promotion Potential: No Known Promotion Potential.

Collective Bargaining Unit: This position is a Union position covered under the collective bargaining agreement (FOP). Applicable fees may be deducted from your salary.

Position Designation: The incumbent of this position will be subject to enhanced suitability screening pursuant to Chapter 4 of DC Personnel Regulations, Suitability Safety Sensitive. The incumbent must be able to pass a criminal background check; therefore, you may be required to provide information about your criminal history in order to be appointment to this position. You will be subject to drug and alcohol testing in accordance with the Department of Corrections Mandatory Drug and Alcohol Testing. In this position, you may be disqualified from employment based on the presence of marijuana in test results, even if you possess a medical card authorizing the use of medical marijuana.

A TB Test is required prior to entry on duty.
