Position Description Position Summary

Performs entry-level network systems work. Works under close supervision, with minimal latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment. Employees at this level may have limited experience or no formal experience and spend the majority of their time performing simple to routine work following standard procedures.

  • Works with internal resources for optimal voice and data network design and adherence to State of Texas client policies.
  • Monitors system usage and makes recommendations to senior level network engineers.
  • Proactively plan and manage projects to include the implementation of voice and data services and voice and data network for clients.
  • Performs Tier 1 support for the network and our clients; provide technical support to peers and other State agencies; coordinate voice and data upgrade, implementation and test plans; performs second level technical supports and escalation for telecommunications voice and data issues within the State of Texas.
  • Ensures compliance with regulatory voice and data guidelines. Research studies, forecasts, and modeling exercises to glean relevant information for the basis of future voice changes.
  • Consults with client organizations to understand their business and technical needs. Represents the agency at business meetings, customer network meetings, conferences; creating and maintaining productive relationships with supplies of telecommunications services to increase knowledge about new network services and equipment; responsible for testing network continuity prior to Customer Premise Equipment (CPE) installations, update appropriate documentation; perform evaluation of vendor capabilities.
  • May occasionally be required to assist with on-call support.
  • Performs related work as assigned.
Qualifications
Education
  • A student currently enrolled in Austin Community College as an upper-division level (junior or senior) undergraduate, with a major or course work in information technology, computer science, or a related field.
  • Must possess academic performance that is considered in good academic standing by college/university standards.
Experience and Training Preferred
  • Fundamental understanding of IP networking and routing and switching.
  • Fundamental understanding of Operating Systems such as Linux or Windows.
  • 2 semesters of undergrad studies in an IT/Network related program.
  • Basic understanding of Network Security.
  • Cisco network certifications encouraged and supported during employment at DIR.

  • Proficiency in the use of a personal computer and applicable software necessary to perform work assignments e.g., word processing, spreadsheets (Microsoft Office preferred).
