Duties & Responsibilities
The Criminal Justice Division is seeking applicants for the position of Assistant Attorneys General to serve as our Bias Crime Resource Prosecutor. This position will work with the DOJ Bias Crime Special Agent to help coordinate statewide response for bias crimes, including consultation with the DOJ Bias Response Hotline team. The selected attorney will be responsible for (in part):
- Providing technical assistance and case support to Oregon prosecutors;
- Working with investigators to ensure thorough investigation prior to and throughout prosecution in bias crime and other cases;
- Coordinating with DOJ Bias Response Hotline advocates; federal, tribal, state, and local prosecutors and law enforcement; culturally-specific community organizations; and other partners to promote best practices for bias crime investigations and prosecutions.
- Developing and maintaining statewide resources on bias crime case law;
- Developing and maintaining relevant publications;
- Developing and presenting relevant trainings;
- Facilitating outreach and coordination with Oregon, tribal, and national programs dedicated to combating bias crime; and
- Prosecuting bias crime and other cases.
The Criminal Justice Division of the Oregon Department of Justice conducts specialized local, state, and federal criminal investigations and prosecutions and provides highly trained and experienced special agents, prosecutors, and analysts to fight crime across Oregon; the Division is the only agency in Oregon that has the unique ability to combine the skills of all three disciplines in a single agency to comprehensively address crime in our communities. The Division also provides outreach and training to citizens, victim service providers, and members of the law enforcement community (including prosecutors) to help ensure that Oregonians receive the highest level of service from the criminal justice system.
The Crime Victims and Survivor Services Division (CVSSD) includes the Bias Response Hotline led by the Bias Crimes Response Coordinator. This team provides assistance to bias crime victims, including safety planning. They coordinate with nongovernmental organizations to provide services to victims and they train these groups about best practices for assisting victims of bias crimes and bias incidents.
This position may be based in Portland, Salem, or Eugene, depending on the location of the finalist.

Required
- Active member of the Oregon State Bar in good standing on the effective date of appointment.
- Knowledge and understanding of bias crime and victim rights.
- Significant experience litigating cases.
- Excellent organization, analytical, oral presentation, and writing skills.
- Willing and able to travel statewide, sometimes overnight, in order to meet case, training, and outreach needs.
- Willing and able to attend occasional evening/weekend meetings.
- Strong work ethic and commitment to public service.
- Able to successfully clear a comprehensive criminal background investigation and reference checks.
- Demonstrated ability to engage and work effectively with culturally diverse communities and commitment to professional development around cultural competency, accessibility, equity, diversity, and inclusion.
- Demonstrated ability to work well with people from a variety of disciplines and backgrounds.
Requested/Desired
- Prosecution experience in a district attorney’s office.
- Experience prosecuting bias crimes and cases with vulnerable victims.
- Experience training attorneys and police officers.
- Experience working with community-based and/or system-based crime victim advocates.
- Experience interacting with people who have experienced trauma and victims/family members who may be in crisis.

This OAJA-represented position will be filled at either the Assistant Attorney General or Senior Assistant Attorney General level, salary range $8,842.00 - $17,168.00 per month, depending primarily on years of legal practice experience and other factors. Employees who are Public Employee Retirement System (PERS) participating members will have their base salary increased by 6.95% and pay a 6% employee contribution to PERS; the salary range noted reflects base salary only.
