Under the general direction of the Staff Services Manager II, Licensing Branch the Staff Services Manager I (SSM I) will plan, organize, and direct the work of analysts engaged in conducting background investigations of applicants seeking an ownership or a financial interest in, or employment with a California gambling establishment, Third-Party Provider, or tribal casino. Responsible for interpreting and applying gambling laws and regulations during the course of a background investigation to make a determination as to the suitability of an applicant. Provides oversight of the background investigation activities conducted by assigned analysts to ensure accuracy, thoroughness, and compliance with Department/Division/Bureau policies and procedures, as well as statutes, regulations, and local ordinances. Oversees the preparation of written reports detailing the findings of a background investigation. Makes recommendations to Bureau management and/or the California Gambling Control Commission (CGCC) for the approval or denial of a license application based on the facts of the investigation and applicable regulations and laws. Represents the Bureau in meetings with respect to the Bureau’s licensing reports and/or processes with the CGCC, local law enforcement and other agencies, gaming industry representatives, and the public relating to gaming matters. Oversees staff assignments/projects and ensures the accuracy of work products.

Department Information

This position is in the Division of Law Enforcement, Bureau of Gambling Control, Licensing Section, located in Sacramento.
