What are the responsibilities and job description for the INSTITUTION FIREFIGHTER (PART TIME) position at Department of State Hospitals - Atascadero?
The Institution Firefighter (Part-Time) will be directed by the Fire Chief, Lead Firefighter or designee in the Fire Department at the Department of State Hospitals - Atascadero. The incumbent will be responsible for the following duties but not limited to:
- Train-in and perform CPR and use Title 22 First Responder standards
- Understand use of and know of locations of personal protection equipment for medical emergencies and/or biohazards
- Administer first-aid to the sick and injured at the scene of an emergency response
- Perform rescue operations at emergency and disaster scenes
- Utilize rescue and emergency medical equipment
- Attend pertinent training classes, including in-service and out-service courses
- Respond to fire alarms and take appropriate action to extinguish fires, minimizing fire and water damage and prevent injuries and loss of life; Alarms include structures, vehicle and vegetation fires, etc
- Knowledge of and ability to operate all fire equipment and apparatus; physical ability to perform manual labor with a variety of equipment including and carrying a minimum of 70 pounds, carry and work off ladders and to operate nozzles, fittings, hose, forcible entry tools, hovels, saws etc.
- Ability to use self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA) and pass an annual fit test
- Work on hands and knees for prolonged periods of time, work unassisted if necessary, work standing throughout the day and work with a variety of tools
- During training and on emergency responses demonstrates the following: firefighting skills, hazardous material incident skills, and rescue and medical skills resulting in certifications as Fire Fighter 1; Operations Haz-Mat and Decon; and First Aid, First Responder
- Complete monthly drill requirements
- Basic computer entry and report writing in Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, and Outlook
- Perform other Fire Fighter duties as required by the Fire Chief

Working Conditions
Part-Time Firefighters are required to work within 20 minutes from the fire station for a timely response.
This position requires you to work within the Secured Treatment Area (STA).
All employees are required to have an annual health review and repeated health reviews whenever necessary to ascertain that they are free from symptoms indicating the presence of infection and are able to safely perform their essential job duties.
Regular and consistent attendance is critical to the successful performance of this position due to the heavy workload and time-sensitive nature of the work. The employee routinely works with and is exposed to sensitive and confidential issues and/or materials and is expected to maintain confidentiality at all times.
A required function of this position is to consistently provide exceptional customer service to internal and external customers.
