What are the responsibilities and job description for the Muslim Chaplain position at Department of State Hospitals-Atascadero?
The Department of State Hospitals – Atascadero is a secure public sector hospital providing inpatient forensic services for mentally ill adult males who are court committed throughout the State of California.
The Permanent/Intermittent Muslim Chaplain will be directed by the Program Director in the Recovery and Mall Services (RMS) Department. The incumbent will be responsible for the following duties but not limited to:
- Consult with the hospital Clinical, Administrative, and RMS staff regarding religious dietary requests, review and approval of vendors, and education
- Conduct quality Islamic religious ceremonies, services, and groups
- Provide spiritual counseling, visitation, and teaching to patients unable to attend activities off the unit as scheduled
- Work cooperatively with the other Chaplains to provide spiritual services and groups
- Perform administrative and institutional duties, following policies and procedures necessary to safely provide spiritual services.
- Direct the provision of regularly scheduled Muslim services and ceremonies.
- Participate in scheduled RMS meetings, Interfaith meetings, and training.
- Effectively communicate with supervisor, Interfaith Team and Treatment Teams.
- Support the hospital's Relationship Security Program
Minimum Qualifications: Currently in good standing with the American Muslim Community. All candidates must attach to their application a letter of certification of good standing issued by the local resident Imam.
Education: Completion of the equivalent of one year of full-time supervised clinical or field training in the community. Such training to include Islamic religious counseling and guidance, religious education, and the care and welfare of the family as it related to religious education AND completion of no less than two years' experience as an Imam or Instructress in the Islamic religion in a public or private institution or masjid.
