What are the responsibilities and job description for the ACCOUNTANT TRAINEE position at Department of State Hospitals?
- In a training capacity, process more complex Accounts Payable contract invoices for payment in a timely manner.
- Reviews and schedules payment for vendor/consultant contracts.
- In a training capacity, makes journal entries, posts ledgers, takes trial balances, audits claims, and performs preliminary reconciliations and adjustments of financial records and reports.
- Utilizes the state accounting financial systems to prepare custom statistical reports, bank reconciliations, and other related work as assigned.
- Process the setup of accounts receivables.
1. BE LIST ELIGIBLE: Successfully complete the competitive State civil service exam pertaining to this classification at ACCOUNTANT TRAINEE, OR
2. BE TRANSFER ELIGIBLE: Have current employment with the State of California in the same classification or in a classification that is comparable (employees who wish to be considered based on transfer eligibility MUST meet the minimum qualifications of the classification per DPA Rule 250), OR
3. BE REINSTATEMENT ELIGIBLE: Have obtained previous permanent employment with the State of California in the same classification or in a classification that is comparable.
- Minimum qualifications will be verified prior to being scheduled for an interview. Please provide proof of minimum qualifications with your application submission, which may include a copy of your unofficial college transcripts and/or out of class paperwork.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Education: Either I Equivalent to graduation from college, with specialization in accounting. (Registration as a Senior Student in a recognized institution will admit applicants to the examination, but they must produce evudence of successful completion of the curriculum and the prescribed courses before they may be considered eligible for appointment.) Or II Completion of a prescribed professional accounting curriculum given by a residence or correspondence school of accountancy, including courses in elementary and advanced accounting, auditing, cost accounting and business law. Or III Completion of the equivalent of 19 semester hours of course work; 16 hours of which shall be professional accounting courses given by a collegiate-grade residence institution, including courses in elementary and advanced accounting, auditing, and cost accounting; and three semester hours of business law.
(Persons who will complete work requirements outlined under II and III above during the current quarter or semester will be admitted to the examination, but they must produce evidence of successful completion of the curriculum and the prescribed courses before they may be considered eligible for appointment.) Successful completion of the State Fund Accounting Course administered by the Department of Finance, shall receive credit for three semester hours toward the required accounting courses.
If it is determined that an applicant does not meet the minimum qualifications, the applicant’s name may be removed from the eligibility list.

Working Conditions
This position may be eligible for a hybrid work schedule. The amount of telework is at the discretion of the department and is subject to change as business needs arise.
