About the Position:

The Virginia State Police (VSP) is seeking to hire an Equipment and Applications Specialist (NOC) in our Communications Division at State Police Headquarters in North Chesterfield, Virginia. The successful candidate will monitor the health of the STARS and VSP Networks in order to identify potential problems and perform appropriate corrective measures to ensure continuity of the communications systems throughout the Commonwealth; provide technical assistance and support to users of VCIN, AFIS, LIVE SCAN, and Department issued MDT’s and iPhones throughout VSP; and ensures that documentation of daily operations is maintained and ensure that the performance of technical and complex duties follow standard procedures and guidelines.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Must be willing to work rotating shifts, holidays, and weekends.
  • Must be able to work in 24/7 operation with scheduling flexibility as required.
  • Working knowledge of networking and telecommunications equipment, processes, and systems; and of Microsoft Office applications to include Word, Access, Excel, and basic computer operations.
  • Skill in operating computers and standard office equipment.
  • Demonstrated ability to use network management platforms.
  • Demonstrated ability to monitor multiple automated systems.
  • Demonstrated ability to investigate system alarms, assess environmental conditions, and determine the correct response or course of action necessary.
  • Demonstrated ability to monitor and maintain operational policies and procedures to ensure IT security.
  • Demonstrated ability to diagnose and resolve equipment and software problems or notify the appropriate repair personnel within established time requirements.
  • Demonstrated ability to provide technical assistance and support for incoming calls, using proper telephone manners and etiquette.
  • Demonstrated ability to perform structured telephone interviews to determine computer related problems.
  • Demonstrated ability to interpret computer problems and provide instructional information.
  • Demonstrated ability to visualize a problem or situation and think abstractly to solve.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively and professionally in English using good direction and voice volume to listen and obtain correct information and relay important information; and to work independently and as a member of a team.
  • VCIN certification is required to perform the duties of this position and must be obtained within three months of hire which requires either U.S. citizenship or a lawful permanent resident of the United States and eligible for naturalization.
  • High School Diploma or GED equivalent.


Additional Considerations

  • Relevant certification in computer/telecommunication technology or related area.
  • Microsoft Certified Desktop Support Technician is preferred.
  • Knowledge of Virginia Criminal Information Network (VCIN) and National Crime Information Center (NCIC) preferred.
  • Advanced knowledge or experience in MS Office applications as well as computer operations and problem resolution are preferred.
  • Prior experience in public safety communications is preferred.
