Southeastern Virginia Training Center is hiring Compliance and HIM Specialist to join our team. The Compliance and HIM Specialist supervises and manages the Health Information Records department. This position conducts audits and quality assurance checks ensuring records and resident information systems are maintained in a high quality and in accordance with regulatory agencies.

About the Role

All SEVTC positions are considered essential personnel and would be required to work in the event of an emergency or facility need. All SEVTC positions are required to work different shifts and/or overtime as requested.

  • Plans, organizes, and directs the management of the Health Information Management Department to establish and maintain systems that ensure the medical records are maintained in accordance with regulations.
  • Coordinates and conducts quantitative record audits for compliance and assists with qualitative audits as needed.
  • Ensures accurate data entry of the census and admission/discharge Avatar data.
  • Assists with management of medical bills and coding
  • Ensures coding and documentation is consistent with all coding requirements and Medicaid/Medicare regulations. Provides training to providers related to documentation requirements as needed.
  • Maintains multiple databases
  • Processes requests for protected health information, ensures authorizations are compliant and assists with HIPAA audits.
  • Develops and implements policies governing medical records

Skills and experience required:

We seek a candidate with prior experience in a Health Information Management department or equivalent education in Health Information Administration or related field. We also see the following:

  • Considerable knowledge of the rules and regulations governing the preparation and maintenance of medical records
  • Prior experience working with Excel spreadsheets and preparing PowerPoint presentations.
  • Knowledge of ICD 10 coding and coding systems.
  • Ability to lead, counsel, and coach employees
  • Ability to interpret policy, laws, regulations governing the maintenance of medical records
  • Skilled in collecting, analyzing data and preparing reports and presentations.
  • Knowledge of privacy laws, HIPAA, access, release of information and the Freedom of Information Act.
  • Knowledge of Virginia records management and retention procedures and schedules.
  • Ability to communicate orally and to demonstrate writing skills in order to prepare written presentations and reports to internal and external customers.
  • Ability to organize documents and files efficiently.
  • Ability to handle multiple interruptions and complete tasks in accordance with deadlines.
  • Ability to provide attention to detail.
  • Ability to work effectively with internal and external customers

Bonus points if you have:

  • Bachelor's degree in HIM Administration or related field.
  • RHIA or RHIT certification.
  • Prior supervisory experience.
