Job Duties
Provides administrative support to the Detainer Unit Program Support Technicians and Detainer Unit Supervisor. Coordinates, implements, and monitors the administrative aspect of detainers filed by local, state and federal law enforcement agencies against Virginia Department of Corrections Offenders in accordance to the Code of Virginia, the Virginia Extradition Manual, and other state and federal laws related to detainer matters.
The Detainer Unit processes and maintains detainers for pending criminal charges, convictions and obligations lodged by agencies and jurisdictions within and outside of Virginia for VDOC responsible offenders. Conversely, the Detainer Unit lodges and maintains detainers for VDOC sentenced offenders in the custody of other agencies within and outside of Virginia. The Detainer Unit authorizes and facilitates the release of offenders to the appropriate authorities and the return of VDOC offenders in the custody of other agencies, to VDOC custody
Minimum Qualifications
High school diploma or equivalent. Possesses basic demonstrated knowledge of the Code of Virginia and the criminal justice system as it pertains to criminal sentencing, outstanding charges, holds, and extradition. Ability to work independently, to analyze, and resolve problems with general guidance from supervisor. Demonstrated ability to comprehend and interpret complex laws, legal documents, and policies. Good working knowledge of and ability to apply office administrative principles and systems. Skill in operating computer and other office equipment. Demonstrated skill in the use of Microsoft Office to include Word and Excel. Must be eligible for and have the ability to obtain required VCIN certification. Prefer experience keying data and scanning documents into an automated system such as VA CORIS. Ability to utilize and maintain automated and written files. Ability to collect, organize, and document information. Ability to critically review, evaluate, analyze, interpret, and prioritize all incoming documents and information, both paper and electronic. Ability to analyze information and provide reports. Ability to adapt to changes in procedures, priorities, and the automated system. Ability to establish and maintain working relationships both inside and outside of the work unit. Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing. Knowledge of the policies and practices of the Department in dealing with information technology, and the safeguarding of data.
Additional Considerations
Experience with computer operation and office equipment applications. Experience in initiating and maintaining files and organizational records. Advanced knowledge in criminal justice, corrections, legal concepts, or related fields. Experience in a field related to criminal justice, especially in criminal procedures and records processes may substitute.
