MassDEP seeks applicants for the position of an Environmental Analyst I (EA I) in the Bureau of Air and Waste Asbestos Program in the Western Regional Office of MassDEP, located in Springfield. This position requires the EA I to be located within the region.

Under the direct supervision of the Asbestos Section Chief or his/her designee, the EA I performs inspections of asbestos abatement sites located in the region. Duties include responding to complaints, performing routine inspections, and taking samples.


Duties will also include:

  • Assisting other staff with Permitting, Compliance Inspections and Enforcement Activities.
  • Documentation of field inspections using appropriate forms.
  • Assisting in preparation of correspondence to the regulated community, including enforcement documents.
  • Participation in regularly scheduled regional meetings.
  • Other duties as assigned.

  • Working as part of a team with diverse groups of people to accomplish goals.
  • Providing clear and detailed communications.
  • Executing tasks with a minimum of supervision.
  • Ability to work independently as well as collaboratively as part of a team.
  • Communicating concepts and giving reports both verbal and written.
  • Working to meet objectives and goals with and without specific deadlines.
  • Interacting professionally both inside and outside an organization.
  • Experience in the nuances of communicating to diverse groups.
  • Technological skills and Internet literacy.
  • Ability to obtain asbestos certifications, including Asbestos Inspector and Asbestos Project Designer.

MINIMUM ENTRANCE REQUIREMENTS:

Applicants must have at least (A) two years of full-time, or equivalent part-time, technical or professional experience In the field of environmental science, biology, chemistry, earth science, environmental health, meteorology, natural science, toxicology or public health, or (B) any equivalent combination of the required experience and the substitutions below.

Substitutions:

I. An Associate's degree with a major in environmental science, biology, chemistry, earth science, environmental health, meteorology, natural science, toxicology or public health may be substituted for a maximum of one year of the required experience.*

II. A Bachelor's or higher degree with a major in environmental science, biology, chemistry, earth science, environmental health, meteorology, natural science, toxicology or public health may be substituted for the required experience.*

  • Education toward such a degree will be prorated on the basis of the proportion of the requirements actually completed.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: Based on assignment, possession of a current and valid Massachusetts Motor Vehicle Operator's License.
