Job Summary:
We are seeking an experienced and detail-oriented Shop Manager to oversee the daily operations of our emergency vehicle shop in San Bernardino, California. Our business specializes in selling, custom constructing, and repairing emergency vehicles, including fire engines, police cars, and ambulances. The Shop Manager will lead a team of technicians, coordinate sales and service projects, ensure compliance with California state regulations, and maintain high standards of quality and customer satisfaction. This role requires a blend of technical expertise, leadership skills, and business acumen to keep our operations running smoothly and efficiently.
Key Responsibilities:
- Team Leadership: Supervise, train, and motivate a team of mechanics, fabricators, and support staff, ensuring a safe, productive, and collaborative work environment.
- Operations Management: Oversee the scheduling and execution of vehicle builds, repairs, and maintenance projects, ensuring timely completion within budget and to customer specifications.
- Sales Support: Collaborate with the sales team to provide technical insights, assist in vehicle customization consultations, and ensure sold vehicles meet client expectations and regulatory standards.
- Quality Control: Inspect completed work to ensure it meets industry standards, manufacturer specifications, and California safety regulations for emergency vehicles.
- Inventory Management: Monitor and maintain inventory levels of parts, tools, and supplies, coordinating with vendors to ensure availability for ongoing projects.
- Regulatory Compliance: Ensure all vehicles and shop practices comply with California Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV), Occupational Safety and Health Administration (Cal/OSHA), and other relevant state and federal regulations.
- Customer Service: Act as a point of contact for clients (e.g., fire departments, police agencies, EMS providers), addressing inquiries, providing updates on project timelines, and resolving issues.
- Budget Oversight: Manage shop expenses, including labor costs, parts procurement, and equipment maintenance, while working to maximize operational efficiency.
- Equipment Maintenance: Oversee the upkeep and repair of shop tools, machinery, and facilities to ensure a safe and functional workspace.
- Documentation: Maintain accurate records of work orders, invoices, warranties, and employee performance, ensuring proper filing and reporting as needed.
Qualifications:
- Experience: Minimum of 5 years in automotive or heavy vehicle repair, with at least 2 years in a supervisory or management role. Experience with emergency vehicles (fire engines, police cars, ambulances) strongly preferred.
- Technical Skills: Strong knowledge of vehicle mechanics, electrical systems, hydraulics, and fabrication techniques specific to emergency vehicle construction and repair.
- Leadership: Proven ability to lead and manage a diverse team, with excellent communication and problem-solving skills.
- Certifications: Valid California driver’s license required; ASE certification, EVT (Emergency Vehicle Technician) certification, or equivalent preferred.
- Regulatory Knowledge: Familiarity with California vehicle codes, safety standards, and emissions requirements for emergency vehicles.
- Physical Requirements: Ability to lift up to 50 lbs, stand for extended periods, and work in a shop environment with exposure to noise, chemicals, and machinery.
- Software Skills: Proficiency with shop management software and basic office tools (e.g., Google Workplace, email, Adobe).
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience working with government contracts or municipal clients.
- Background in sales or customer-facing roles within the automotive or emergency vehicle industry.
- Knowledge of California-specific emergency vehicle standards (e.g., Title 13 compliance).
