Job Summary
Reporting to the Vice President of Student Affairs, the Dean of Students provides leadership, vision, and administrative supervision for the Division of Student Affairs in the areas of student wellbeing, engagement, and experience. The Dean serves as an advocate for students across campus through direct oversight of specific functional areas and through strategic and collaborative partnerships. The Dean of Students assists the Vice President and divisional leadership team in ongoing efforts to align the growth and development of the division with the College’s strategic plan and ensure continuous improvement, assessment, and the student experience.
The Dean of Students provides direct oversight for functional areas that support student wellbeing, engagement, and experience (Counseling, Student Wellness and Resources, Judicial Affairs & Title IX, Student Clubs and Activities, Information Center, Evening/Weekend Services, and International Enrollment, etc.).
Essential Functions
Engage area directors in strategic planning, area and departmental goal setting, and ongoing assessment that aligns with divisional goals and learning outcomes. Lead divisional efforts in evaluating and promoting wellness, engagement, and student experiences, both in divisional structure and in supporting student success. Evaluate and provide recommendations on how division serves a diverse and changing student population, aligned with College’s strategic plan.
Provide administrative supervision for the areas that support student wellness, engagement, and experience by working closely with department leads to align departments with College’s strategic plan. Lead and assist departments with continuous improvement, assist with challenges/conflict, and perform duties related to hiring, onboarding, training, professional development, and performance evaluation.
Support and oversee division’s care and conduct. Supervise and support the college Title IX Coordinator/Judicial Officer. As the leader of the DMACC Behavioral Intervention Team (BIT) Team, collaborate with divisional leadership (Campus Safety, Academic Leadership, Housing, etc.) on addressing student-related incidents. After evaluation, provide recommendations regarding the Division’s risk assessment and management systems. Train and inform college constituents around care, conduct, and Title IX issues.
Use independent judgement on overload and waiver requests and decide to approve or deny requests. Work with Campus Advisors and Navigators as needed regarding outlined success strategies in the Academic Improvement Plans and review supporting personal statements and documentation presented by students related to academic standing appeals.
Perform other duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications
Master’s in educational administration, postsecondary education, student services, counseling, or related field.
Six years of professional experience in an educational setting, including two years in an administrative or leadership role.
In-depth knowledge of the community college systems.
Demonstrated excellent communication and human relation skills.
Demonstrated knowledge in planning, organizing, administering and assessment of student services and programs.
Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equal opportunity, and the academic, intellectual, and social development of all students and employees.
Demonstrated competency in strategic planning.
Demonstrated competence in budget planning and management.
Demonstrated ability to promote collaboration, teamwork and partnerships with internal and external constituents.
