SIGN ON BONUS!
The Des Moines Public Schools is offering a sign on bonus for ALL newly-hired bus drivers! Details are listed below-APPLY TODAY!
$2,000 Sign-On Bonus:
- $500.00 paid after 30 actual working days.
- $1000.00 paid after the successful completion of the probationary period of 90 actual working days.
- $500.00 paid after 180 actual workdays.
The District is willing to train and assist you with obtaining a CDL within 60 days of hire.
**Special $5,000 Sign-On Bonus for candidates who have current CDL and proper valid endorsements of school bus, passenger and air brakes!**
• $1,000.00 paid after 30 actual working days.
• $2,000.00 paid after the successful completion of the probationary period of 90 actual working days.
• $2,000.00 paid after the successful completion of previous 180 working days.
*Disclaimer:
Previous DMPS bus drivers who have worked for the District within the past six months from resignation date will not be eligible for the sign on bonus.
Hiring Requirements:
Work morning and afternoon shift daily, other hours may be available.
Twenty (20) years of age or older.
Ability to obtain Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) within a 60 day period.
Ability to obtain State of Iowa School Bus Operators permit.
For internal candidates :a meets or better evaluation, no employee conduct documents the past 12 months and no more than 10 days of unauthorized absences the last 12 months. See transfer language for more details.

BASIC FUNCTION:
Operate a school bus in a safe and efficient manner to ensure the safety of passengers. This position requires continuous use of independent judgment. The essential functions as shown below represent only the key areas of responsibility; specific position requirements will vary depending on the needs of the Transportation Department.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Operate the school bus in a safe, effective, and proficient manner.
- Provide guidance and training to bus associates in the performance of their respective assignments and duties.
- Comply with all pre-trip and post-trip procedures and expectations.
- Report all vehicle damage and/or repair items using established procedures and forms.
- Ensure interior and exterior cleanliness and appearance of the school bus.
- Maintain appropriate student behavior on the bus and report policy infractions as appropriate.
- Assist in providing the necessary safeguards to prevent loss of or damage to property, or failure of mechanical equipment.
- Assist in the inspection, operation, and use of specialized equipment for students who may have additional accommodations, including wheelchairs, safety vests, etc.
- Complete Medicare paperwork.
- Utilize a computer for District and Department email communications and online training courses.
- Attend professional development.
- Adhere to District policies/prcedures and Department work rules.
ADDITIONAL ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS (for every DMPS position):
- Attend work on a prompt and regular basis.
- Maintain confidentiality.
- Maintain satisfactory and harmonious working relationships with the public, students, and other employees.
- Assist with other duties as may be assigned.
HIRING SPECIFICATIONS:
Required Education and Experience:
- Twenty (20) years of age or older.
- Ability to obtain Commercial Learner’s Permit (CLP) prior to hire.
- Ability to obtain Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) within a 60-day period from date of hire.
- Ability to obtain and maintain a State of Iowa school bus operator’s authorization.
- Maintain a valid DOT physical.
- Maintain a Motor Vehicle Record that meets District Guidelines.
- For internal candidates, meets or better rating on employee evaluation criteria established by the district, 10 or fewer days of absence during the past 12 months, zero (0) incidents involving formal discipline on file, and meets all other stated requirements of the job posting.
