Deschutes Wilderness Therapy (DWT) is an effective and exciting alternative for struggling teens, young adults, and their families, and is the premier wilderness therapy intervention. We are consistently challenging the national therapy frontier. DWT is the home of cutting-edge trauma-informed care & wilderness intervention.
DWT is currently seeking applicants for full time, year-round or seasonal, Field Instructors at our beautiful Bend, Oregon location. Field Instructors ensure a safe and therapeutic milieu in a wilderness context for our groups of struggling teens and young adults.
Field Instructors are responsible for groups of students on backpacking outdoor expeditions and will work 8 days straight in the Central Oregon wilderness (8-day on/6-day off schedule).
Field Instructors oversee group structure, supervision, safety, curriculum facilitation, teaching wilderness skills, and will be working hand in hand with DWT Clinicians and Leadership Team as a critical part of the student's therapeutic process.
Pay ranges from $45-50,000.00 annually.
Responsibilities
- Be mentally fit to mentor students during their therapeutic process
- Day-to-day facilitation of programming
- Quick and responsible decision-making regarding risk management
- Implementation of program philosophy and clinical model
- Student supervision
- Leadership and responsible decision making in regard to caregiver role in student relationship
- Daily communication of student process and physical and emotional safety pertaining to students
- Daily communication of logistical needs and environmental safety concerns
- Overall care and welfare of students in a wilderness context
- Direct care responsibilities
- Crisis response
- Completion of daily paperwork
- Weekly planning of group activities and facilitation
- Logistical duties
- Drive a company vehicle and transport staff and students safely
Qualifications
- Must be able to pass a background criminal investigation with Oregon DHS
- Care for others in a strenuous outdoor environment
- Sleep on the ground without causing or exacerbating any pre-existing injury
- Ability to lift and carry 50 pounds for extended durations
- Be at least 21 years old
- Minimum of 1 year experience working in the adventure or outdoor field with at-risk, youth, or comparable experience
- BS/BA degree in a related field is preferred
- Proven and excellent leadership, communication, and problem-solving skills
- Must possess and maintain current First Aid and CPR certification
- Wilderness First Responder certification within the first 6 months
- Must hold a valid driver license with an acceptable and clean driving record
