What are the responsibilities and job description for the Deseret Magazine fellowship position at Deseret News?
Our company is committed to being trusted voices of light and truth reaching hundreds of millions of people worldwide.
About Deseret Magazine
Proposed as a state in 1849, Deseret once stretched from the Eastern Sierras to the Rockies, down to the Mexican border, and across what is now Idaho, Wyoming, and Oregon. Deseret Magazine covers this vast and storied territory and its intersection with the broader world. Through deeply reported narratives and thoughtful essays informed by our heritage and values, we celebrate the people and culture of this often-overlooked region and explore the politics and ideas that animate it.
Each issue of Deseret Magazine serves two purposes: helping our readers understand the place they call home and explaining how national and global events shape their lives. With a mandate that is both regional and national, we showcase the beauty, complexity, and evolution of the Mountain West, while also elevating the stories and perspectives that make this region relevant to the rest of the country. Our ambition is to become The Atlantic of the West.
About The Role
We are looking for a talented and driven writer to join our team as a fellow for six months. The job is full time with benefits and pays a competitive starting salary for a staff writer at a regional magazine. The ideal candidate will have 2-3 years of experience in journalism, preferably with a background in magazines or longform storytelling. We’re looking for someone who understands, reads, and studies magazines—someone who appreciates the craft of storytelling and the power of deeply reported narratives.
The ideal candidate is curious, humble, and intellectually ambitious. They should have ties to the Mountain West or a deep understanding of the region—its history, its politics, its culture, and its contradictions. A strong candidate will be comfortable reporting on everything from complex policy issues to cultural trends to overlooked human stories that illuminate the character of the region.
What You’ll Do
Please submit a cover letter, résumé, and 2-3 writing samples that best showcase your ability to tell rich, reported stories.
