Role and Responsibilities
- Lead the design and development of the truck cab Exterior/Interior systems/components (Hood, Fenders, Bumper, Grille Asy., Splash-guards, Cab Steps, Exterior Lights, Exterior Handles, etc.)
- Work with cross functional teams to ensure packaging and component interface requirements are achieved
- Support in root cause activities during development and manufacturing
- Manage all release activities including change management and compliance
- Ensure program milestones are achieved
- Review industrial design drawings, models and specifications to determine requirements and/or feasibility of product.
- Create CREO CAD models and drawings. Perform mathematical computations to develop, design and create detailed specifications of components.
- Create innovative new solutions for truck cab exterior systems for an exciting new platform development.
- Facilitate NPI (new product introductions) process for product development and identify requirements for new products in the market.
- Design new products and recognize feasibility in integrating new technologies into new cab designs achieving tooling and part cost targets.
- Work collaboratively with industrial and manufacturing engineering teams during the NPI process to ensure the highest quality products are delivered.
- Perform preliminary and advanced work in development of working layouts and final master parts, assembly and drawings.
- Make bill of material and drawing revisions following the Change Management Process.
- Create and release Bills of Materials for new sales and designs.
- Act as a liaison between Engineering and other departments/personnel.
- Work with suppliers of truck can exterior system/components on a daily basis.
- Complete design studies, tolerance stack-ups, layout, drawings, calculations, weight estimates and provide supporting documentation.
- Support Part PPAP by developing required design development documents i.e. FMA, DFMEA/PFMEA, DVP&R, Part Dimensional requirements, Control Plans etc.
- Lead virtual/physical product design verification.
- Support pre-production builds for exterior system/components for flaw-less vehicle launch
- Other duties as requested, directed, or assigned.
- Comfortable with complex problem solving and rapidly changing priorities
- Comfortable in high pressure environments during rapid ramp up periods (as is the case during next six months)
Qualifications and Education Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related field desired. Equivalent education and experience required.
- 3 years of experience in product development in automotive/heavy truck cab exterior components required, Class 7/8 truck chassis highly desired.
- Proficient in Design for Six Sigma and Design for Manufacturing/Assembly
- Proficient in Design Failure Mode & Effects Analysis (DFMEA) & Design Verification Plan & Report (DVP&R)
- High level of problem-solving and analytical skills
- Strong leadership skills and able to lead supplier teams.
- Ability to communicate complex issues to cross-functional teams and management.
- Proficient time management and organization skills to prioritize multiple projects and complex solutions
- Ability to perform root cause analysis, component validation and debugging of cab exterior system/component issues at component & vehicle level
- 3-D CAD proficiency required; CREO and Windchill experience desired.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, particularly Excel, required; experience using ERP and CRM programs desired.
Experience with electrical, hydraulic, pneumatic and mechanical systems on mobile and on-highway heavy equipment.
