Job Title: Summer Teacher
Hours: Monday through Thursday from 8:30 AM to 12:30 PM; Friday from 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM; Mandatory Teacher Training: June 23, 2025 to August 1, 2025
Pay Rate: $40 per hour
Reports To: Youth Development Director
General Description of Position:
The desired candidate will be able to successfully interact with and engage youth in high-quality workshops and activities through best-practice facilitation. These will focus on ELA and Mathematics, and are for teachers, retired, or planning on getting their teacher’s license. The candidate will successfully engage with youth in grades K-5 to support youth in achieving academic success, developing life skills, and providing new experiences and opportunities. All staff and volunteers must uphold high ethical standards and demonstrate leadership qualities that represent Developing K.I.D.S. positively and respectfully.
Specific Duties:
- Provide high-quality and focused ELA and Mathematics instruction following the Lavinia curriculum (Training will be provided)
- Develop/facilitate workshop plans that align with the program's mission and goals (academic enrichment, life skills, service learning, leadership, etc.).
- Facilitate ELA/Mathematics level assessments, documenting and tracking scores
- Engage in regular contact with all youth and parents, providing support to meet their personal, physical, social, and emotional needs
- Facilitate workshops in person
- Maintain accurate attendance and classroom records according to program requirements and engage in debriefing sessions for each activity/workshop
- Interact with all participants in a positive manner that reflects the mission of the organization
- Work cooperatively with youth, staff, and/or volunteers to plan community service projects and/or special events
- Intentionally engage with parents
- Assist in creating vivid and welcoming displays and classroom setup
- Promote a team concept through a positive approach to supervision, communication, and interactions
- Other tasks as assigned.
Characteristics/Skills/Qualifications
- Be able to participate in the full program for the summer (June 23, 2025 to August 1, 2025)
- Currently have a valid teaching degree, retired, or going to get your teacher degree
- Utilize Lavinia curricula during classroom instruction
- Good listener and ability to work well with youth
- Minimum of 1 year of experience working with youth
- Training/Education in Youth Care/Youth Development is highly desired
- Punctual and dependable
- Efficient in Microsoft Word applications (Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Publisher) and Google apps
- The desire for and demonstrated service in the community
- Must have reliable transportation.
- Knowledge of the resources, demographics, and culture of Detroit
Must pass a criminal and child abuse/neglect background check.
