Job Description
Clinical Lab Supervisor
Reports to: Lab Manager Department: Lab
Classification: Salary Effective Date: 11/21/2019

SUMMARY:
The laboratory supervisor implements the Clinic’s mission, goal, and objectives by exemplifying the short-and long-term vision, values, and goals of the department by performing clinical laboratory examinations, proficiency testing, quality control, professional consultation, instrument maintenance and validation, testing management and other operations.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Meets all responsibility requirements of clinical laboratory technologist as defined by states and federal law.
- Assists the laboratory manager in the day to day activities of the laboratory, including staffing, training, scheduling and supervision.
- Is able to solve problems and handle difficult situations with little or no supervision. Has written and oral communicative abilities adequate to comprehend technical material and communicate with medical professionals.
- Develops, implements, monitors and utilizes appropriate systems for specimen collection, processing, testing, recording or results and quality control. This includes the pre-analytic, analytic and post-analytic phases of such systems.
- Performs clinical testing; reviews all test results to ensure cost containment, expeditious testing, and continuous quality control.
- Performs clinical laboratory examinations as well clerical duties as need in the laboratory.
- Devices work schedules and allocate duties to laboratory staff.
- Receives written or electronic requests from physicians for routine or special laboratory.
- Maintains and /or oversees maintenance of test equipment and instruments so ensure accuracy and efficient performance.
- Must possess sufficient academic, technical and clinical skills and knowledge to evaluate, trouble shoot, research, and resolve day –to-day problems that arise or special projects as assigned by the laboratory manager.
- May be required to oversee the work of students and trainees.
- In the absence of the lab manager, is designated as acting manager of the laboratory, with all incumbent duties.
- This is a mid-level position reporting directly to the laboratory manager.
Minimum Job Requirements:
- Bachelor’s degree in clinical laboratory science, one of the specialty areas, or on of chemical or biological sciences.
- Board certified (registered) with an approved certifying agency, e.g., ASCP, NCA, AMT, or equivalent.
Experience: A minimum of five years’ experience, wide degree of creativity and latitude is expected.

Performance Requirements:
Knowledge:
- Knowledge of proper techniques, methods and procedures of basic clinical laboratory testing are required
- Knowledge of how a laboratory functions and the laboratory’s role in health care delivery is required.
- Familiarity of clinic protocols and policies.
- Knowledge of HIPAA
Skills:
- Skill in the use of computer data terminal is essential
- Skill in collecting specimens from patients through phlebotomy or verbal instructions.
- Skills in prioritizing tasks and time management.
- Strong organizational skills.
Abilities:
- Ability to interpret and respond appropriately to instructions.
- Ability to discern all colors of the white light spectrum.
- Exercise courtesy and cooperation with patients and other customers contacts as well as Clinic and medical staff.
- Ability to build rapport with patients and co-workers.

Work Environment: Routine duties involve primarily laboratory-related conditions.
Daily functions may include incidental exposures to unpleasant vapors, fumes, moving mechanical parts, risk of electrical shock, chemical and biological hazards, patient contact, waste handling, and computer use.
Most functions require use of protective equipment such as face shield, gloves and fluid resistant coats.
Physical Requirements: Must possess the physical and mental abilities to perform the tasks normally associated with a Medical Technician such as standing six to eight hours per day, walking, bending, and reaching. Occasionally lifting up to 30 lbs. of supplies and equipment and helping with patient transport and transfer. Some stress when dealing with priorities and anxious patients.
