Responsibilities

Diagnostic Laboratory Services, Inc. (DLS) is Hawaii’s largest locally owned and operated medical testing laboratory. DLS is considered a leader in the Hawaii, Guam and Saipan communities we serve. As an integral part of the patient care team, DLS uses state of the art testing and value-based informatics to promote optimal patient care and positively impact patient outcomes.

SCHEDULE

Regular Full-Time Position (Evening)

Must be available 3:30 PM to 12:00 AM (midnight). (Must be available to come in early occasionally and work overtime as necessary based on operational needs.)

Must be flexible with schedule changes to meet operational needs.

Job Summary

Supervises employees and operations for the department. Ensures operations meet regulatory requirements. Partners with the manager in hiring, developing and coaching employees. With department Manager, directs supervisory team and the overall operations of the department in support of the company and department mission, vision, shared values and strategic goals. Provides leadership by planning, organizing and directing operational activities to ensure service levels meet the needs of the clients and patients. Positively represents the department, management and the company.

Duties And Responsibilities

  • Supervises and oversees the day to day operations of the department. (35%)*
  • Ensures staffing and work assignments meet operational requirements.
  • Keeps abreast of changes in industry, makes recommendations, and implements changes with immediate supervisor's approval.
  • Ensures work environment that provides maximum safety and health and encourages safety awareness among employees.
  • Ensures that all policies and procedures are accurate and reflect current practices and are communicated with management team and employees.
  • Identifies and analyzes problems; makes decisions and takes appropriate action.
  • Assists in developing and implementing plans within scope of responsibility to meet organization's strategy.
  • Hires, trains, develops and coaches employees. (35%)*
  • Hires, on-boards and ensures employees are trained appropriately.
  • Takes active role in performance management of all employees in a timely manner – recognition, progression and corrective action.
  • Positively contributes to employee engagement activities.
  • Consults with immediate supervisor and Human Resources as appropriate.
  • Actively documents employee contributions, situations and takes action with HR assistance.
  • Monitors employee health activities and follows up on delinquent events.
  • Ensures payroll is completed on time.
  • Monitors employee compliance of mandatory training.
  • Serves as the resource person for area specific events and responds to trouble calls including after-hours calls.
  • Ensures operations meet State, Federal, and other regulatory requirements and accreditation requirements, as applicable. (15%)*
  • May serve as General Supervisor, Technical Consultant and/or Technical Supervisor to meet CLIA requirements. Refer to Laboratory Personnel and Licensure Requirements policy (QI-11-PER-01) for performance assessment and regulatory responsibilities.
  • Maintains all facilities in compliance with all federal, state and company regulations and/or policies regarding safety, compliance, IT security, etc.
  • Microbiology: Provides guidance for Microbiology-related functions at the hospital laboratories.
  • Provides customer service. (15%)*
  • Consults with Medical Director or other medical personnel regarding clinical laboratory tests
  • Maintains positive working relationships with internal department and external clients.
  • Participates in meetings and conferences required with laboratory partners, such as the State Department of Health (DOH) and the Centers for Disease Control (CDC).
  • Participates in daily laboratory rounds and provides direction to employees on critical and problem testing interpretations.
  • Provides direction to pathology residents and medical students during their rotations.

  • Consults manager or other appropriate resource.
  • Plans, organizes and implements procedures for the efficient use of supplies and equipment.
  • May perform duties of MT, MLT, TLA or LA as needed.
  • May be responsible for Decentralized Laboratory Testing (DLT)/Point-of-Care Testing (POCT).
  • Ensures operations of assigned area(s) meet state, federal and other regulatory requirements and accreditation requirements as applicable.
  • Ensures the availability of technical supervision in accordance with regulatory agencies. (Technical areas)
  • Implements and maintains quality control/assurance programs as required.
  • May serve as General Supervisor and/or Technical Consultant/Supervisor to meet CLIA requirements.
  • Assists in developing and implementing plans within scope of responsibility to meet organization’s strategy.

  • Requires wearing personal protective equipment (PPE) such as, but not limited to, lab coats, gloves, eye protection, face shields, and face masks as needed.
  • Able to travel by air or ground as needed.

Typical Working Conditions

  • Work environment includes conditions common to a hospital/laboratory environment, including working directly with potentially hazardous chemicals and/or patients with communicable diseases. Potential for inadvertent skin, eye, mucous membrane, or parenteral contact with blood or other potentially infectious materials.
  • Generally works in an indoor, air-conditioned area.

Education

QUALIFICATIONS

Required

  • Bachelor’s degree in a chemical, physical, biological or clinical laboratory science or medical technology from an accredited college or university or Associate degree in a laboratory science (chemical or biological science) or medical technology from an accredited college or university.

Required

Experience:

  • Five (5) years as a Medical Technologist or Medical Laboratory Technician.
  • As applicable: Four (4) years of training and/or experience in high complexity testing in the designated specialty(ies) of service for which the person is responsible and 6 months of experience in high complexity testing for the designated subspecialty(ies) of service.
  • Microbiology:Five (5) years work experience as a Medical Technologist, Medical Laboratory Technician, Clinical Laboratory Scientist or Specialist in Microbiology.
  • As applicable: Four (4) years of training and/or work experience in moderate and high complexity testing in Microbiology and 6 months of experience in high complexity testing for the designated subspecialty(ies) of service.
  • Blood Bank:
  • Five (5) years work experience as a Medical Technologist, Clinical Laboratory Scientist or Specialist in Blood Banking.

Preferred

  • One (1) year supervisory experience..

Certification

Required:

  • Certified as a Medical Technologist (MT), Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS), Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT), Technologist or Specialist in the assigned/responsible laboratory discipline by an agency recognized by the Hawaii Department of Health State Laboratories Division.

Preferred:

  • Blood Bank: Certified as a Specialist in Blood Banking, SBB (ASCP).

Licensure

  • Hawaii: State license as Technologist, Technician, or Specialist, as appropriate.
  • If position requires bench coverage in the Blood Bank department, a Hawaii State license as a MT is required unless otherwise approved by the Laboratory Director.

Skills

  • Ability to communicate effectively in English, both in verbal and written form.
  • Ability to work effectively both independently and with a team.
  • Excellent customer service skills.
  • Effective coaching skills.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite of applications.

Other Qualifications:

Required

  • Valid driver’s license and/or able to travel between business locations.
  • If required to drive a company vehicle, a current acceptable abstract will be required.
