This position is currently part time. In house training takes 12-14 weeks, scheduled at 40 hours a week. Once Training is complete, hours vary from 20-40 per week depending on scheduled open hours & vacation/sick time taken. Hours will be a combination of days, afternoons & nights. If a full time position opens, our part time employees are given first opportunity to accept the full time position.
Job Overview:
As a 911 Dispatcher, you will play a crucial role in coordinating and dispatching emergency services, law enforcement, or medical personnel to various locations. The ideal candidate will have excellent communication skills, the ability to analyze situations quickly, and the capacity to remain calm under pressure. Though we are not on scheduled swing shifts, all dispatchers are expected to work day and night shifts depending on their assigned schedule rotation.
Responsibilities:
- Receive emergency calls and gather essential information
- Dispatch appropriate personnel to the scene of emergencies or service requests
- Monitor and track the location of field units using GPS or GIS systems
- Communicate with emergency responders, law enforcement agencies, and medical professionals
- Transcribe and relay important information accurately and efficiently
- Analyze situations and make quick decisions regarding resource allocation
- Maintain accurate records of all calls, dispatches, and related activities
- Provide support to field personnel as needed
- Ensure compliance with all relevant laws, regulations, and protocols
Skills:
- Strong communication skills, both verbal and written
- Proficient in data entry and record keeping
- Knowledge of dispatching procedures and protocols
- Familiarity with GPS or GIS systems for tracking purposes
- Ability to analyze information quickly and make sound decisions
- Understanding of law enforcement or medical terminology is a plus
- Ability to remain calm under pressure and handle stressful situations effectively
An online skills test will be given to all applicants. Test may be retaken after 6 months for those who have previously taken. Candidates will be interviewed and a background check completed. Successful candidates may be offered conditional employment with successful completion of the training period. Training will consist of a 3-month hands on approach at the Dickinson County Sheriff’s Office 911 Dispatch Center. Basic Dispatch and Advanced Dispatch schools follow within the first 2 years, with all cost paid by the Sheriff’s Office.
