The San Francisco Standard is currently seeking an experienced Art Director to join our creative team. This is an exciting opportunity to play a pivotal role in shaping the visual direction of our rapidly expanding digital media company.

Reporting to the Creative Director, the candidate has a background in new media and editorial content design. We are looking for someone who excels in a fast-paced environment, can manage multiple projects simultaneously, and is proficient in producing high-quality designs across various platforms and technologies.

We are looking for innovative ideas and forward-thinking individuals who can create designs that authentically capture the essence of San Francisco and its residents.

Responsibilities :

Collaborate with editors, photo editors, multimedia professionals, and other journalists to create engaging storytelling experiences across multiple platforms
Determine the most effective approach to tell a story
Work closely with product designers and data analysts to enhance user experience and outcomes
Collaborate with the Creative Director to establish brand consistency across the newsroom
Design, direct, and coordinate the implementation of stories using our CMS
Commission and oversee freelance illustrators and other artists
Produce photo-illustrations as needed
Work with the Creative Director to develop branding for new initiatives

Requirements :

2-5 years of relevant experience, preferably in (digital) media or publishing

Proficiency in design fundamentals such as typography, layout, balance, hierarchy, proportion, rhythm, emphasis, and unity

Strong understanding of systems design and branding strategy

Flexibility and adaptability in various design scenarios

Experience delegating work to freelancers of different levels to ensure timely and high-quality project delivery

Extensive network of artists and illustrators

Demonstrated user experience sensibilities and a strong sense of curiosity

Stay updated on new tools, technologies, and resources in the design field

Ability to identify challenges in work and collaborate with others to find solutions

Passion for building relationships and leveraging them to align teams towards a common vision

Proficiency in design software such as Adobe Creative Suite and Figma; animation skills are a bonus

The San Francisco Standard is a hybrid workplace, where employees are expected to be in the office four days a week.
