The Residence Life Coordinator will promote and enhance a supportive community environment in his/her residence area which is conducive to academic achievement and student growth. The position requires sound judgment to supervise student Resident Assistants and Community Assistants. The Residence Life Coordinator will also provide crisis response to individual students. The Residence Life Coordinator is expected to be a strong partner with various stakeholders including students, faculty, staff, and parents. The Residence Life Coordinator will collaborate with colleagues within the Division of Student Success, academic affairs, and facilities. The Residence Life Coordinator will provide a structured and engaged living environment that enhances student learning and development through quality programming, policy enforcement, and high community standards. 

  

The Residence Life Coordinator is a full-time, 12-month, live-on, professional staff member responsible for managing a residential complex. Principle responsibilities include: staff supervision and development, residence education, community development, crisis management, administration and building management, student discipline, hall association advising, summer operations, and other departmental and university-wide responsibilities. In addition, as the primary professional staff member available in the residence hall, the Residence Life Coordinator is expected to spend evening and weekend time with students. 

  

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following:

Participates in on call emergency and duty rotation. 

Manages and oversees the management of the main desk operation. 

 Maintains proper student informational records essential to the assignment of residents and operation of the hall and staff. 

  

Assists in administering room assignments, changes, and selection. 

 Assist the Office of Residential Life with the administration of early arrivals, interim, summer housing and conference. 

  

Plans and directs program to new students and assists in their integration into campus life. 

 Initiates and conducts group conferences to plan and discuss programs and policies related to the assignment of rooms, social and recreational activities, and residential living.
  

 

Supervises residence hall activities.


 

 Investigates reports of misconduct and attempts to resolve or eliminate causes of conflict. 

Interviews all residence hall students to determine need for counseling. 

Supervise and evaluate the atmosphere in the residence hall on an on-going basis in order to ensure that residential life reflects the nature and goals of the University's mission. 

  

Coordinate the general administration and management of the residence hall. 

Conduct regular resident assistant meetings, as well as frequent individual meetings with resident assistants. Assist with the planning and coordinating of the pre-semester and in-service training sessions for resident assistants. 

  

Develop, coordinate and implement student development programming in the residence hall. 

  

Motivate students and student staff members to plan and participate in student development programs. Encourage students to maintain an atmosphere conducive to achieving academic excellence. 

Work closely with maintenance personnel in order to facilitate the overall functioning of the residence hall. Assume responsibility for initial disciplinary counseling with students in the residence hall. 

Assist in maintenance of appropriate office records and files. 

  

Coordinates and assists students' development by aiding students in obtaining assistance from other University or community offices or agencies as needed. 

  

Ensure maintenance of accurate time log of hours worked by all student personnel within hall. 

Distribute residence hall keys, and maintain an accurate "activity" log ensuring proper security at all times. Assist with the planning and development of an annual calendar that cites all management and programming responsibilities, events, and deadlines that must be met by the residence hall office.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES 

  

Develop goals and objectives for the hall and staff. 

  

Trains, supervises, and evaluates the RA/CA staff and other student staff. 

  

Assist in the recruitment and interviewing of all Resident and Community Assistants and professional staff. 

  

Provides proper staff coverage, including emergency duty, for the academic year (periods of hall openings, closings, and vacations included). 

  

Handle emergency situations, utilizing crisis intervention skills and resources. 

  

Serves on a committee to assist in the planning, development, and implementation of one of the core areas of residence life (recruitment and selection, professional staff, training, paraprofessional staff training, diversity, assessment or leadership).
  

 

Schedules regular hall staff meeting to disseminate pertinent information, present in-service training, plan hall programs, and resolve problems. Schedule individual meetings with key stakeholders on a regular basis. 

  

  

 QUALIFICATIONS 

The successful candidate will possess a sound understanding of student development theory and philosophy; previous experience in residence life/housing with ability to administer a comprehensive set of rules and regulations, and the ability to explain, interpret and apply rules and policies in a rational, objective, and consistent manner; proven quality program planning, organizational, administrative, supervisory, and budget management skills. 

  

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE 

Bachelor's degree required, Master’s degree preferred. Supervisory experience and extensive experience in residential living, knowledge of student development, strong communication skills, and a demonstrated capacity to work with a diverse student population are preferred. Energy, commitment, flexibility, and enthusiasm are highly desired. 

  

LANGUAGE SKILLS 

Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, parents, students, faculty, staff and other members of the University community. 

  

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS 

Ability to work with fundamental mathematical concepts. Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations. 

  

REASONING ABILITY 

Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS 

Employee must be available for a live-on position. Employee must maintain confidentiality in all work performed. Must be flexible in work schedule. Must be willing to work evening or weekends for special events, crisis response, and/or opening and closing of hall. Must be willing to participate on an on-call duty rotation cycle during breaks and university closures. Must abide by Residential Life policies including no pets. Must pass a background check performed by Human Resources.
